I dunno if this was on the news or not, but today I had the ... pleasure ... of walking with George Bush while he gave a speach and consoled the families of all 167 fallen police officers over the past year as Police Week came to a close.
I politely said good morning as I put the lav on him, and the conversation grew to immigration and how I actually agreed with him on a few points before we walked out to the podium where he gave a speach.
Normally I'll be the first to give the guy a really REALLY hard time - but I have to say today I was amazingly surprised by the part you probably won't see on TV. Bush spent over 2 and a half hours talking to and hugging EVERY SINGLE family that was in attendance today despite that he had an 8:00 television address and I would imagine quite a busy schedule. Then what I hear from members of the Police who organize this event (Fraternal Order of Police) that Bush has spent just as much time every single year and his father almost as much time every year he was in office (Clinton too!). Supposedly overheard by a member of the pool, Bush told his staff to not rush him at all and he didn't care what the schedule was for the rest of the day.
I don't like his politics at all, but I'm slowly starting to question my dislike of the guy. Today I really was impressed, but perhaps it was just the sun that got to me.

Doing what a President should do. Good on him.

It does tend to come as a shock to our well-developed cynicism, but many people who go into politics are actually decent and do care about their fellow citizens.
That's not to say that at least half of them don't have their heads up their asses policy-wise, but at least they're trying... :)

I believe that most of us would like to think we would do exactly the same in his position, meaning no slight to his intentions. We are a nation based on a set of laws, and we have people whose job it is to enforce those laws and make daily life for the rest of us as safe as they are capable of doing. It is a sad fact of the job they are willing to take on that some do not make it home at the end of the shift.
I salute them.
And thanks for sharing your experience Kel, and shedding some light on another aspect of the President.

Well of course you won't see that on TV. There's no controversy in someone being a "good egg".
He's a decent guy, who had extraordinary circumstances thrust at him.
Just remember to question what the media throws at you, whether its Fox, or CNN.

Of course there is the good side of people. Reminds me of a MASH episode with Winchester and his candy. Kindness and acts of the heart don't mean as much when you are doing it for the recognition. Maybe he didn't want the media there while he was doing those things so the families would feel his trueness as opposed to just looking good for the media. It shows a nice side. Thanks for the info.
/tips his hat to GW.

Or perhaps the whole thing was completely staged to make him look good, of course. Dude, that's politics. All politicians do it.
don't forget, of course, that the man and his policies are 2 different things. he could be the nicest guy in the world and still be a terrible President. Conversely, he could be a scumsucking philanderer and still be a decent Pres.

I'd rather have competent S.O.B., than an incompetent nice guy as president.

Well I guess Billy Clinton was your man.
He knew how to be a President, but that whole Fidelity during Marriage didn't reflect on his character at all.
Except Osama Bin Laden noted it in his "Reasons Why We Hate America" letter.

"You are a nation that permits acts of immorality, and you consider them to be pillars of personal freedom...Who can forget your President Clinton's immoral acts committed in the Oval Office? After that you did not even bring him to account, other than that 'he made a mistake,' after which everything passed with no punishment. Is there a worse kind of event for which your name will go down in history and be remembered by nations?"

One of my staunchest liberal professors told us once, "Hate the politics, don't hate the man. While I might disagree with Bush on nearly every point, I could still sit down and enjoy a beer with the man."
Ideologues ftw. I R TEH h8 bush!111
