"And we're going to help. The United States will help the people of Cuba realise the blessings of liberty." To which the Cuban people collectively smiled, nodded, and slowly backed away.

To which the Cuban people collectively smiled, nodded, and slowly backed away....except those who are locked in a 3x3 cell standing in their own feces.

Something tells me he and his brother will find ways to hang on to power for as long as possible, under whatever name they want to call it. It is said that Mr Castro has been the target of many CIA-sponsored assassination plots as a result of such policies - in 1999 a Cuban interior ministry official put the figure at 637.637 policies, or assassination attempts? Because, if it's assassination attempts, that's really embarassing. Shouldn't the CIA be experts at this?

He's going to buy a retirement property in Florida.
His daughter is already living there, so maybe she has picked out some property for him.

With Cuba recently uncovering huge oil deposits offshore and I'm sure financial support from China I doubt we'll see a significant change.

Fanny, you provide the best reasons for the US to change its policy completely.

It isnt a good thing for cuban people. Raul is worse than Fidel as in he is more militant and will take about 6 months after his brother dies to have crap get really bad. The current oil situation will make it pretty bad.
Raul's death which i really think wont take long, will signify a beginning of Cuba's change.
The issue has always been you kill Fidel, Raul then is in power and no one wants that.

Perhaps Raul can accidentally shoot himself in the head twice.

LOL Akipt. I fear your right Grey(your a Cubano-American if i remember it?) hopefully there are not more revolutionary old guard waiting in the wings.
I always thought the embargo was the stupidest of things(going back to the 80's and high school) good trade and realtions over the last what? mmm..40 plus years could have done more to move Cuba towards moderation than what we see now.
In that light demand Cafe Cubano, it's better than cocaine!!

Looks like the old guard has opted to stay in power.

The posturing that they are doing is comical at best. They are doing what they can to keep heat off them until the oil money starts coming in.
I am so frustrated...its going to be another 15+ years before things can change now. Too many people ahve to grow old and die or be killed to make change.
Jose Ramon Machado, ergggggg god damnit, another miltary man.
The joke of a parliment, its like england but backwards...parliment is for dog and pony show and the dictator does the real work.
