View Full Version : Found an ipod...

I found a (uck, pink) ipod while walking my dog this morning. In terms of modern portable music technology, just so you know where I rank, I still have an old cassette walkman that works. The battery on the ipod seems to be dead. There's no ID sticker on it that I can see. Sooo, those of you with more experience than I...

- Is there a way to find out who owns it? I heard Apple does a registration thingy, does that mean I can give it to them and they return it?

- Barring the ability to give it back to the owner, is using this thing as simple as buying a power cable and connector cord and plugging it in?

Yes to all the above.

How many people actually register their electronics though? Chances are, they didn't.

If you're really interested in doing the nice thing, put up a "found Ipod" sign. Since it was probably a jogger, they'll run by and see it tomorrow. So when they call, have them tell you what color it was. No thief will guess pink ;)

Yea but if it was a jogger wouldn't they of realized they lost it as soon as the music stop playing? :p

Just guessing here!

Apple fervently tries to sell the extended warranty for those, it's fairly likely there is a means to trace it to the owner.

If the iPod is merely crashed, it's possible to give it a hard reset (method varies by model). However, if the battery is dead replacing it is not an entirely trivial matter for someone who isn't technically inclined and the replacement battery will likely run you $25 or more.

Thanks for finding my iPod. I wondered where I left that. Please send it back, ASAP.

Pink iPod? Oh, sorry, never mind, I thought you found my pink Hello Kitty Personal Massager.

Was anyone else expecting a link (in that weird can't look away from the car crash sense) to some weird hello kitty fetish "massager" out of that post?

Anyways, should be fairly easy to get their information if they ever bought anything off iTunes or regestered their iPod.

/raises hand) At least I was hoping... Palimax, you big tease! ;)

Had there been one, I'd have known what to get my little sister for Christmas - she has a cute fetish, and collects that crap, in addition to being highly sexed and having a prediliction for 'naughty cheerleader', etc, outfits - it seemed like a good, erm, fit.

Regards,
Nydia

Nydia - I purchased a *pair* of Hello Kitty personal massagers for my significant other for her birthday. Both a 5 inch one, and a smaller chap-stick sized one -- both made by Sanro as "official" merchandise, and both since discontinued.

The only decision is, like with other good collectables, to take it out of the box or not :)

Erm, by dead I simply mean it probably needs to be charged up, and I don't have a power cord that fits the ipod base. Or I'm not turning it on right, a distinct possibility. My students promised to bring one in tomorrow (knew they were good for something) and help me out. How embarassing, I've become the old guy who can't work the VCR.

There is a serial number on the back, is there somewhere that can be used to reference an owners name? Ya'll are beatin' around the bush here, I'm not sure exactly how to go about finding this info. I figured someone here might own an ipod and shed some light.

Google searches didn't turn up anything major, although I'll confess I've not looked around Apple's site too much yet. I was impressed to see that software piracy from office computers and stores has begun, as you can walk in with an ipod firewire and plug right in. Nifty, but not the info I was seeking.

You can get a $5-10 iPod USB cable/charger at any BestBuy/RadioShack type place. The iPods themselves only have a single cable input which is a combination USB/FireWire/power jack. It's sort of comical since the wall-wart for charging one indepedent of a computer looks decidedly like the USB implementation of an EtherKiller (http://www.fiftythree.org/etherkiller/).

Lol :) Reflecting on the other thread, all the available evidence suggests that my bombshell sister is *highly* monogamous. She is a handful, but whoever she falls for gets *all* the goodies - she's rather puritanical that way. Someone please give her a good home and picket fence! Her biological clock is ticking... :)

Sorry, by the way, Kanlyi, for the hijack :/. I hope that you get your found IPod working, and unfortunately I can't contribute anything to the thread, as I know next to nothing about the devices, other than the superfluous tittilation that's already marred your otherwise useful discussion ;).

The thing you have to watch out for with that iPod is that if you connect it to a computer with iTunes on it other than the one it's "bound" to, that computer will happily replace the contents of the iPod with its iTunes library (which, with a new iTunes installation, is likely to be nothing.)

Unless the owner has stored information in the address book, you're not likely going to be able to trace that iPod back to its owner.

So ipods are computer specific?

Seriously. I feel like I missed out on an entire cultural/technological revolution, and I'm usually up to date on these things.Sorry, by the way, Kanlyi, for the hijack :/.Umm...have to admit....I was holding on for more of the sister story as well. Hijack away! :D

Gee. I'm trying to remember something. What could this thread use. What are those things I see on the 'net all the time.

Oh yeah. PICS.
