The US is currently not producing enough engineers and scientists to keep up with demand. I hope more of this type of thing helps get kids interested.

North Carolina has just started a program, Learn and Earn Online (http://www.nclearnandearn.gov/), allowing high school students to get a jumpstart on Associate's degrees while still in school. I've only just heard about it, so no idea how efficacious it is, but in tandem with the above programs, hopefully more kids will see and take advantage of these new opportunities.
