From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada July 4th 2010:

A flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota .

The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. "He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay,eh?"

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. "Not real effective," he said. "The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk."

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves.

"A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said. "I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. "They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though."

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced
to shoot wolves from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them for the Rapture.

In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catchinga half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers on Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the '50s.

"If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age," an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies.

"I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them," an Ottawa resident said. "How many art-history and English majors does one country need?

You know, it's funny, but might not be that far from the truth.

Funny you should say that. I have actually thought about moving to Canada if McCain wins and it seems I'm not one of the few but one of the majority. Almost everyone I know who is an Obama supporter has said they are thinking of leaving if McCain wins.

Well, they've been saying that for nearly a decade now. Full of hot air.

The problems we're facing right now transcend political party though. Many of those with any real wealth have already moved out of the country over the past year or two.

Indeed, I thought it was true.

Though I do remember Robert Redford saying he was immigrating to Canada if Bush was re-elected.

Still lives in Hollywood.

And I think you should elect McCain just to get rid of Strisand.

The truly wealthy have been post-nationality for a long time. Canada is one of the easier "escapes" obviously but quite a few people have been either "retiring" early to tropical locales or relocating (or relocating back) to Europe.

Any talk of an exodus is entirely hyperbole (or hypochondriac depending on your point of view) but people with means won't be sticking around if it goes south -- the white flight doesn't have to stop at the suburbs. If the financial situation really does tank, you may have something of an inverse-Left Behind :>

Ireland doesn't have income tax on people who have "artist" as their profession. Would be a bit better weather than Canada maybe, and the ale is better ...

Best reason I've seen yet for a McCain vote. :D

Alec just wrote a book, explaining why Lawyers are teh ebil when it comes to Family Court matters. I guess that's a good enough reason to leave a voice mail to your daughter calling her a "thoughtless little pig,"....

seriously what the big deal with baldwin calling his daughter a thoughtless little pig.

On that note, I wasn't referring to histrionic actors, but the educated and monied people who have transferable job skills, contacts in other countries, speak several languages, etc. The cost of relocating is very high, primary in the social contacts sense, but not insurmountable. It's pure stupidity to think that the same exodus that played out in every other failed economy can't happen here.

Economy aside, we've talked seriously about leaving when our parents are gone. Unless significant and unlikely correction is effected by the next administration, this country is no longer America.

If America's economy tanks then I would suggest trying Europe.

Canada is America's biggest trading partner. Just over 1 billion dollars in goods and serverices crosses our borders everyday. A tank in your economy means we are soon to follow. Most of the recessions we have had over the past 50 years haven't been "as" bad as America but that is probably due to a smaller population base and perhaps more sound financial rulesets (just guessing here).

Now if your speaking from a purely political standpoint then by all means, Canada takes on all comers. We aren't a melting pot, but more of a multi-cultural society, at least that is the direction our charter of human rights is taking us.

I am not sure claiming political asylum will get you very far though ;). You would need to score very high on the immigration application or you would require a sponsor.

Another factor to take into consideration is WINTER !

If you are a Northern state resident then it may not be as hard to acclimatize as someone from the south.

Here in Ottawa we are only 100km North (you will have to switch to metric too!) from the border with New York. But that 100km makes a huge difference in how cold it gets during the Winter, and the farther North you go the worse it gets. Try taking a vacation to Winnepeg in February before making any immigration plans, don't forget to bring your block heater, jumper cables and winter tires as well, your gonna need em.

Some other things you need to know before you think of making the move:

- You will have to become very polite and say sorry a lot.
- Don't like beer or donuts, sorry please return from wence you came.
- Hockey, its not just a game, its the ONLY game.
- Summer begins when the thermometer reaches 10 C (more metric for you)
- Its called pop.... not soda.
- You may be required to shovel snow off your roof
- Get used to seeing more than 2 choices on a ballot (more like 7 on average)
- You will have to drop "y'all" and replace it with "eh" and "hoser".

Seriously though, besides the rush in the 70's from draft dogers we don't see very many immigrants from America unless there is some sort of family, romantic or business reltionship happening.

I can't see this trend switching, it is very hard for someone to leave their country of origin and move to a completly new country. Most of Canada's immigrants move here to improve their quality of life in terms of economics. We don't see very many political dissidents.

My plan is to move to either Canada or Dubai if Obama loses. This hasn't been America for a long time

Yeah, we weren't really considering Canada ourselves. I hate the cold.

How 'bout Australia or Costa Rica?

I've heard Australia is very difficult to immigrate to.

The lying ads put out by McCain and his third wife are starting to convince me that he can sway enough of the the knuckle dragging idiots to vote for him.

Most have probably seen this before, but I saw a funny campaign bumper sticker the other day:

Valdemort

Like Canada, Australia strongly weights immigration applications based on whether or not you have family who are citizens or residents already in the country, although some exceptions are made for professions in strong demand (less so than for Canada, however). One advantage of emigrating to any of the EU member nations is the new system which allows a work permit in one member nation to be recognized throughout the EU; so if one has any familial advantages in, say, Spain, but wishes to work elsewhere in the EU, one can use that angle as their 'in', although folks in high tech positions such as engineering and science, again, find this somewhat easier as special dispensation is made for professions in high demand and the prospective employer will frequently assist with making a case for emigration to fill an unmet need. In my case, I would stand a better chance of successfully emigrating to Denmark (where I have family) and taking things from there, although the only other language I have even marginal command of is French...

Nydia

Well, I do recall a sweet little druidess from Canada that was running with my guild for a while.
