The producers actually made an account and posted on www.westeros.org, the biggest ASOIAF fansite out there, asking for casting ideas. The Westeros guys made a whole forum for it.
Here's the post:

Game of Thrones is the first book of George r.r. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (may he finish before he dies like Jordan did).

I envy you for having not started this series yet.
If yer not into reading epic length series, just wait for this to come out. If you are, and you like "holy shit, did the author really just do that" moments, you might want to pick up A Game of Thrones.
For reference, I liked the first 6 books of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, but then got bored and only kept reading because I liked the Mat Cauthon storyline. Jordan starts with one storyline, but then branches out to 3, then 6, of which I tend to only be interested in 1-2. Also, very little happens in some entire books, as Jordan spends an inordinate amount of time with descriptions.
With Martin, there's usually around 5-6 storylines going on, of which I tend to like 4-5 and can slog through the other 1-2, and every chapter is very information dense/plot pushing (well, at least until book 4, but I'm giving him a mulligan for that one). Rather than spend forever with one story, he fills the dead time of any particular plot by skipping to a plot where action is happening.
Yeah, I'm Jonesing for this.

Looks like I found a new series to read. I agree with your thoughts about Jordan and is over descriptive characters and story lines. I've heard of this series but just haven't started it. It certainly sounds interesting and I love long lengthy series; I'm just weird like that.

good news (http://grrm.livejournal.com/58155.html), Martin himself says the script is very faithful to the book. If he says it is, I'll take him at his word. My excitement for this continues to grow...

Same! Never knew it existed! I'll have to read through the Malazan Book of the Fallen series first though. :p

Well if Martin says it's good I'll have to watch it. I really don't think they'll do it justice ( rereading it now myself ). As I reread it I see evidence where the author himself wasn't sure how long the series was going to play out. With the danger of the Cold Ones, the old King's son/daughter of the dragon looking for an army, and of course the tragedy of the Starks along with the treason of the Lannisters being a full hand to deal out.
That's only a fraction, what the cult growing under Stannis's nose , the over all civil war and well hell there's just so much going on.

It's um....A series you like to hear your friend's reactions to the omfg parts after each book...and hearing what they think is going to happen in the next book... Like watching a friend watch Momento for the first time.
I mean, the second book in the series has a reputation for being "book most likely to get tossed across a room". He invests you in the world, and then lights a very entertaining fire to it.

I'm pretty sure he took all the characters that I liked, held them up to me lovingly like a parent holds up a new pet, then set them all on fire.

The key is the books make you feel something. I've never felt fear for my favorite characters in any other book like I do with Martin. Every single plot twist is foreshadowed, hinted at, or mentioned in passing before it happens, and you still don't see them coming.
All I ask is that you read "A Game of Thrones" to this line:
"The things I do for love."
It's less than 100 pages in. If you aren't hooked by then, then it's ok to delay reading.

Yeah its the best fantasy series I've ever read.

That's because this is really an experiment in how far you can go hating your readers. The first dozen times that happened I thought it was a good departure from the limitations of normal fictional style. Then it became a self-caricatured cycle of endearing, shock, and loathing without end, amen.

And the psychological effect on fans, caused by waiting for a book.

Where Jordan's problem is books that go nowhere, Martin's problem is productivity. :)

Jordan's problem is about 2000 pages to many of braid tugging, and matriarchy.
Well that and he died :)

I suppose that means Jordan's got a productivity problem now, too, then... /duck
