Saw it opening weekend. Thought it was surprisingly good, had a couple real gutbusters in it. Seemed like it was right up Steve Carrell's line of humor.

I'll probably watch it when it comes out to DVD myself. It seems the better it is at the box office, the longer the wait for the DVD to come out.
I do love the original get smart though. Very hard for movies to get the feel of the originals usually. (Unless you use the original cast)
Just waiting for "Gilligan's Island the movie" to come out.....

No one could ever do Gilligan proper again.

I think we'll be seeing this soon as it's one that Leah has been waiting for. She loves Get Smart, I need to see if I can find the original series on DVD or something for her bday. Glad to hear it's good :D

Its not how it seems, that's exactly how it is. They release, and depending how long the show runs (I.E. how much $$ it brings in) they try to keep it in theaters as long as possible, then they wait for awards because winning a major award will get them a spike in theater views in second run theaters. Only when its out of second run theaters will they license it for OnDemand and PayPerView, and THEN it goes to DVD (or waits a bit for before a major holiday if its very successful).

Get Smart was amazingly, surprisingly good. There's a sequel starring the supporting characters out on DVD shortly.

For those who have not seen it yet, be warned that it doesn't really have quite the same feel as an episode of the TV show elongated, it seems to me to be more like Rush Hour's formula of a 'serious' story with lots of comedy pinned into it. Very well done either way though I thought.

I like Ann Hathaway; I can take or leave Steve Carell. He is funny enough on his TV sitcom, but in movies he is more of a strain (watching the same character over and over).

Also, I grew up with the original and would be unable to watch this movie without making comparisons, and so would not enjoy it as much. I will most likely wait for it to hit HBO or something.

Really, I don't tend to see comedies in the theatre. I don't get anymore out of seeing one of them there than at home. At home I can buy the dvd for less than two movie tickets, and I am not missing anything on a smaller screen.

I generally only go to action movies (rarely, because it's expensive to get a baby sitter to go to the movies), or something that's appropriate for my kid to go too. She really enjoys the big screen, and I know how much I enjoyed it as a kid.

I do want to see Get Smart, but I'll just buy the dvd.

If I go to another movie before a couple of cartoons that come out in November, it will be the Dark Knight.

Some of the comparisons are what makes it that good though. Hearing the various catch phrases, seeing Maxwell visit #19 in unusual spaces, and all of that was the best part. I watched all the episodes as a kid, it made the movie that much more enjoyable compared to my friends.

i was compelled to watch this in theaters....i was sad to say was disappointed. I dont want my money or time back, but i wish I had seen this on DVD in stead of blowing $20 on a date night.

It seem too forced to have the same witty just manurisms (spelling??) as the show did, and the humor at times made me chuckle but at times was TOO predictable.

Again I am jaded towards Steve Carell i just dont find him or Will Ferrel funny, they try too hard IMO.

I'll refrane from commenting till I see it, but I did see a Get Smart Movie on TV a lot which I didn't mind seeing over and over again:

The Nude Bomb.

So many good scenes. The desk car. The Zipper. The fact that they catch the villain too late. This was a 100 percent good movie.

Has anyone seen the pre-quel to this? Bruce and Llyod something out of control? It has Hiro from Heroes in it and it was ok I guess. Leah loved it, I was just like oookay? I'm wondering if Get Smart is like this?

Would you guys say it was a matinee type of flick, or just a netflix?

Eh, it would be alright as a matinee I guess. It wasn't a bad movie, just not really that funny and never hit its own stride between homages to the series. It would be just another mediocre spy comedy if not for the history of the show, which is more of a drag than a benefit really.

I saw it as a matinee haha. I guess it just depends on what you like. Leah liked it, I thought we could have waited for it to come to video. But, I agree with Malse's assesment it just never really found its' groove.

Now that I think about it, seeing the comments about matinee versus Netflix, I don't think I have gone to a single movie in the last ten years that was not really heavy on effects, like LoTR or Chronicles of Narnia. With a good home system it seems a waste of money to see most of this stuff coming out these days at a theatre. If there are not some great effects that would be enhanced by the large screen, why bother?

That's usually how I look at it Byl. Few movies gain anything by being on the big screen and if I'm convinced that it won't, then I'll just wait for Netflix.

The one caveat to this being when the wife wants to see a movie. If seeing a date movie on the big screen once in a while keeps her happy, then I'll gladly pay the price of full admission! :)

I agree with this whole heartedly, with one glaring exception, children's movies. I love taking my daughter to the movies; I get to see an awe from her that I just can't replicate at home even with our nice home system.

She's thoroughly enjoyed seeing Happy Feet, The Simpsons (yes I know, not a kids movie, but it was just a cartoon to a two year old, lol), Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Wall-E. I just wish she would have been able to see Cars on the big screen as it's her favorite movie by FAR.
