I don't get the big deal about this. You can achieve the same results or better with existing pills.

Only one thing comes to mind with these new drugs over the birth control of yesteryear.
Sideeffects??
Will my mate be able to have children when we want to without worrying about it having a tail or 2 heads? Will she be able to have kids.
Fucking with nature is kinda scary.

Mirdorr's right that there are other treatments that do these (suppression of menses via hormone treatments, i.e. Depo, etc) just as well or better. I'm more curious about the effects of long-term menstrual suppression via these pills on such things as blood pressure, female and other cancers, mineral balance, and a few other things affected by artifically keeping someone's body thinking that it's in the first stages of pregnancy for years at a time (which is what the Pill does). I was one of those folks who couldn't tolerate the side effects associated with being on the pill (I had mood swings, weight gain, and other symptoms while *on* it), so maybe I'm a bit biased here, but I can't think that suppressing your period long-term is a good thing.
I think there's certainly a legitimate medical use for these for women who have severe menstruation-related problems (I once had a roommate who was literally incapacitated for a day and a half every month for example). But as the article mentioned, there are numerous health benefits and protections that women get during their 'childbearing years' from having a regular menstrual period. And to all those guys out there cheering about the thought of their significant others' not having a period any more, what's wrong with earning your red wings, anyway ;) ?. Not to mention that many women get frisky around that time of the month due to the change in hormone balance, and that sex is great for relieving both cramps and stress... :)

I have a friend who is on "constant cycle" hormone therapy because she bleeds very, very heavily. She spent a week in the hospital before she went on therapy due to blood loss.
Now, hers is an extreme case- before the advances in medicine we have now, odds are very good she would have died due to her hemorrhaging . Did I spell that right?
However, for a healthy "normal" woman to do this... /shrug. It is their body. Still, when I was dating someone a while back who used the pill for birth control, she went off of it for several months after being on it for a year, because it was supposedly healthier to give your body a break. I'm no expert on women's health issues, so I'll take that at face value.

I think there have already been studies done on that, Nydia. I think there are many doctors who condone not having an "off week" in your cycle if the bleeding bothers you (for whatever reason).
