Very true about metal seekers!

When I was tromping around Paraguay a while back, one day there was a large storm in the area I was in and some phone cables came down.

Before the day dawned, all those cables were long gone, taken by someone to strip the copper out of them, lol. I'm sure the cables were a great source though.

We've had problems with people trying to steal the copious amounts of heavy wiring left around substations for temporary patch and repair purposes for years. (Un)fortunately a lot of the thieves don't understand the distinction between wire laying on the ground and some of it running into transformers ...

I don't think that learning curve allows for make-up tests. :p

People stealing man-hole covers, they have a rent-a-cop at the housing complex they are building next to me because thieves are stealing the aluminum framing materials and selling it to scrap places.

How I understand it, it is quite a lucrative buisness.

Becoming the shortest path to ground is usually a one-time only event, particularly when that transformer is likely stepping down from a 3-digit kVA circuit to only 2-digit kVA for local distribution (120 V at .1 amps, or 12 VA can kill you in the right circumstances).

There was, briefly, a t-shirt circulated with the words "Congratulations, you have become the shortest path to ground!" with a picture of that chick from Weakest Link, but they clamped down on that.
