Having watched the video, I'm going to try and get an invite to sign my business up for it!

I've been using it since it was GrandCentral. Switched to it as my primary contact number about six months back, and haven't had any trouble.
One of the best hidden gems is being able to get SMS messages without having to pay to forward them to a cell phone.
I don't have any invites left, but I've heard that they're letting people in relatively quickly now if you sign up for the waiting list.

Oh, hrm, so if I call from a regular phone number though - that number will show up on the call ID, not my google number? That's the only hurdle. Kinda wish Verizon offered a similar service.

If you're at a computer, you can make an outbound call through GV. You tell it you want to call one of your contacts or an ad-hoc number, which phone you want it to ring, and then it connects you then the number you want to call.
If you have a phone with a GV app, it'll let you do that from the phone too. You just dial through the app, it calls you, then GV calls the number you dialed.
Worst case, the GV site has a good mobile version where you can do this too.
edit: This is the GV Mobile app on my phone, for example:

And this is the regular iPhone phone app:

Practically identical.

i still chuckle that a thread about phones cant go by without Sanchek and sms being in it.
I was reading a industry magazine, forget which one, that this stuff is the predicessor to some of the 4G technology that is going to be used.
All VoIP communication with routing funcitonality.

It takes an AT&T employee not to be happy when a free service solves one of the most universal problems with cell phones!
To be clear in case there's any confusion, Google Voice is not VoIP from end to end like something like Skype or Vonage.

Where in my post did i say i wasnt happy with the free service?? I know my spelling and grammer are bad but....kind of a "strawmanish" statement from you isnt it?
To clear up confusion, i know its not VoIP, but 4G phone technology (which is what my last two statements were referring to) is in esscense stepping away from the voice delivery we use now (digital to analog to digital) and going 100% data oriented VoIP phones.
Basically every cell phone will be Skype/Vonage but mobile, and TBH you should see lower rates and better deals on things like data and voice.
