Just to drum up conversation what grade do you give the State of the Union speech if you watched it. Vote over in the polls section.

It was refreshing to hear a positive speech for a change.

He attacked head on the notion that we're unilaterally in Iraq. That was hilarious when he listed all the nations with troops there.

"There is a difference, however, between leading a coalition of many nations, and submitting to the objections of a few. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our country."

Anyway, I gave his speech an "A" because I'm a partisan devil-loving neo-con sheep.

I love the speach. Somehow he plans to Keep Tax Cuts, Increase Spending AND Balance the Budget!

Perhaps President Bush thinks Magic Pixies are going to make all three of these things happen. I can believe any two you care to point at, but all three at once are impossible.

Empty Promises rate a C- in my book.

It's the economy stupid.

Buz, you'd have passed out halfway through the speech :) I preferred "Nukular" personally.

Eliminating Government waste would do a lot of this. So would cutting government funding of specific social programs. I can tell you Food Stamps need to die. I want my money back.

Yes Nobbin, amazingly enough cutting taxes can increase revenue.

Tax relief always boosts the economy, leading to job creation and increased revenue.

You remember that story in economics how that $10 pizza you buy on credit costs $40 when you finally pay it off (5k on card...paying minimum payment). We currently have a 500b deficit...ouch. Remember...we pay interest on those loans...

The "tax relief" did not apply to anyone making $24k/year or less. A class of people that more and more folks are falling into with the exportation of jobs overseas. If you find yourself in that range...there was no tax relief for you. This kind of tax relief will typically only *possibly* create low pay retail jobs to service all these people rushing to Walmart to buy a new PS2 with their "tax relief."

Good job creation is done by offering companies incentives to expand and hire. This is where Bush has done a shitty job. He has done very little to create jobs. Instead of waging war, we could have been spending money creating government contracts to update the infrastructure of America. Not paying to rebuild foreign countries. He could have been making policy to reduce government costs associated with hiring employees...opening new plants. Could have increased the amount of money available for the Small Business Association to give more loans to small starting businesses. He did none of this. This is where his focus should have been. It may be "the economy stupid", but if people don't start getting good jobs again soon it's just going to deflate.

Bush's claim to fame on helping the economy were his "tax relief" programs and his cutting the dividend tax. Neither were, IMO, enough. His focus has been too far away from home for his entire presidency. 9/11 pretty much demanded something be done...but considering the lack of evidence that Sadaam had anything to do with 9/11 or was even a current significant threat to the US...it seems this whole thing could have been put off till he got his back yard in order. It doesn't make sense why Bush put off working on the economy and attacked Sadaam in the name of the war on terror.

Bush is nearly everything Republicans claimed they disliked about Democrats 10 years ago.
