For me its the Hot Water Heater. Nothing better after a hard day of work then a nice hot shower. Now this is just MY opinion.

Whats your favorite invention and why?

the electric guitar.

--reason? just about everything else I like has an alternative, but nothing replaces the electric guitar in the music I like.

Hey Selwen :)

You've got a good one there, but have you ever had the fortune to stumble upon the propane-powered camp hot water heater? When you're out in the chilly grime of a fall camping or hunting trip nothing spells decadence like that little tent 'o heaven... (it has a pump which cycles water through a collapsible 'tank' and an immersion heater)

I hooked up with some friends last November for Texas Renaissance Festival and not only did my friend have a tent a large as my apartment, with a full-sized airbed *and* a space heater in it, but her crew had this little marvel set up in the morning before we got dressed up to go get grimy in the crowds. I felt somehow... dirtier for using it ;).

Regards,
Nydia

You could also just get one of those black bag showers that you hang from a tree in the sun. Never went so far as propane, but the black bags get hot enough for a shower even in winter.

Birth Control

The condom was invented LONG before birth control. As was the metal coat hanger.

Or, maybe, beer.

Personal GPS. I love being able to run or ride my bicycle and have all the information right at hand, pace, distance etc..... It stores my last 100 workouts.... very nice.

After that on a more basic level I think the bike was a good invention :)

The Internet.

I think this current, fundamental transformation of how we communicate is a permanent game changer (if we can maintain net neutrality). It's on the level of the printing press.

Well, the condom is birth control. I didn't read explicitly in his post about the pill, I read it as birth control more as a general term.

How about the reason that a hot water heater/indoor shower even works...

Each and everyone of us, if you had to list the items including your house that you would be the most upset to lose, 10 to 1, your PC is in your top 10, i would even venture top 5

I'd be even more upset at the loss of my lap!

Sorry for derail. Agree with Sanchek, tho' that Internet is on a par with Printing Press in contribution to mass communication.

Well... if I had to pick my top 10 things I'd hate to lose in my house.

1) The TV (for me, my wife, and my kid. This would cause the most commotion of anything we might lose)
2) My car (it's parked in the garage at night, so I consider that 'in my house')
3) My bed (I won a $3000 mattress set a few years back, helped my sleep immensely)
4) My Computer
5) Refrigerator
6) Washer/Drier
7) Remote Controls for various objects
8) Stove
9) DVD player (my daughter would be lost without being able to watch Cars)
10) DVR

Top 10 things I'd hate to lose in general:

1) My daughter
2) My wife
3) My parents
4) My house
5) My job
6) Food
7) My car
8) Our main TV
9) My bed
10) Clothing

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

A computer or laptop to me is worthless without the internet. Even playing games just isn't the same as multiplayer games!

I'm not entirely sure what I would consider the greatest invention ever. I need to ponder this more.

Much like Fild I had to ponder this a bit, I cannot settle on any one single thing so I'll go with a top ten of Modern Inventions associated with the 20th-21st Century:

1) Jet Power

2) The Internet

3) Cell Phones

4) GPS

5) Digital Photography and Videography

6) The PC

7) Defribrillator (I live because of this)

8) Kevlar

9) Barcode Scanning

10) Lesbian Videos (I live for this)

I just received my copy of "In The Garden" by Gypsy, which I had been hunting for for the last thirty years, and am listening to it now. With this in mind, I have to add as a greatest invention all recording systems/formats, that allow great music/compositions to be saved and replayed and shared with others for their enjoyment.

Not sure what I would do without music.

penis/vagina beats opposable thumbs!

Who needs a penis? Dildo all the way! Fashionable colors, they buzz, spin, gyrate, and don't talk back! ;) You don't have to satisfy it, it just satisfies you!

I'm still not sure about the greatest invention ever. Though I am leaning towards the Integrated Circuit. I'm not sure we'd be here today were it not for that and many of the things folks have listed have most likely come about b/c of it.

On the same token, I'd have to rank the internet as we know it today. It has changed so much of what we do and how we do it in such a short time frame and our need to have it grows expotentially.

Orthoscopy. So many previously invasive surgeries have been replaced by this. It helps to decrease infection, recovery time, and hospital stays.

Air planes/travel. The ability to be in one country today but in another on the other side of the globe in 15hrs has significantly impacted all facets of our lives from leisure to business to health.

Massage Therapy/Therapist. After a day of using some or all of the above there's nothing quite so relaxing as having someone intimately but not sexually (in case Rover thinks intimate = sexual!) release all the pressure points in your body and help rub the stress away.

There are more but hell if I can think of them right now.

The Internet really has transformed the world in such a short time it's amazing. April 15th i rushed down to the post office to get my extension mailed and ended standing with a group of about 6 other men none under the age of 35 and not one of us knew what the current price of a paper stamp was. was quite comedic. I ended up putting 50 cents in stamps on just to be sure.
