Last night I was driving home from an entirely too long and too tedious day of work. Got stopped at a DUI checkpoint, and the officer took my license and registration to run "real quick". Turns out Virginia said my car was uninsured, though I had my insurance card and even a copy of my last insurance bill in my car. The officer said it was irrelevant and I had to clear it up with the DMV, which of course was closed at 11:00. The officer called a friend in DC who ran my license there and it showed up as me having insurance and no problems, ditto with Maryland, but for some reason the incompotent sons of bitches at the Virginia DMV made me have to wake up two of my friends to have them pick me and my car up and drive it the 5 blocks to the 14th Street Bridge so I could start driving in the District on my way home. Got home 2 hours after I left work :(

Called the DMV this morning and get an "Oops, sorry ... its all cleared up" after waiting on hold for 50 minutes, but they couldn't do anything about the court date. I still need to take a day off from work to sit in a courthouse to tell them I have insurance ... not that they believed me when I was sitting behind the wheel of my car with the insurance card in hand. End of story this entire ordeal is gonna cost me around $300 plus dinner for the 2 friends who rescued me because the government can't be held accountable for their own stupidity.

Years ago my father took my brother off the family insurance plan due to his developing speeding ticket collection. The company, for reasons unknown, took my car off the plan as well, but without informing me. Imagine my surprise when I found out...

I've also had my license suspended without my knowledge, and which could have resulted in all sorts of unpleasantness. The pisser of it all is that these kinds of problems are easy to get into but a pain in the ass to get out of. Like falling head first into a bear trap.

But I thought the Government had the answer for everything.
That's what Hillary Clinton said....
And the VA DMV is a real pain. I lived there for 19 years, and although I only drove for 4, getting anything done there was an ordeal to say the least.
14th street bridge Kel? That brings back memories....

You wouldn't have had to do any of this if you had been an illegal. :)

the incompotent sons of bitches at the Virginia DMV ...... the government can't be held accountable for their own stupidity.

I empathize with your situation, and it does indeed suck to be the victim of incompetence.

But, your problem is with the Virginia DMV, yet you turned it into a problem of the government. How does that work? Taking an issue with a single agency and making generalized statements about "government" is in part why we get such apathy when it comes to making change. Do what you are able to fix the problem caused by the Virginia DMV, which means being compensated for your time and money; you cannot fix government stupidity, but you do have avenues to at least try to fix the DMV data entry employee's incompetence.

I hope you can get satisfaction if you get the right judge.

Doubtful, given the way judges are appointed.
Remember all judges used to be lawyers.
While most young lawyers are idealistic, and want to help thier fellow man, I've never seen a young judge.
By the time they put in enuff time to become a judge, they are generally too jaded to care about much other than perhaps a political career.....
Good Luck to ya in finding justice, however misguided the hope may be.

Not all judges are appointed some are voted in. And oddly enough those voted in are not allowed in some cases to state their ideoligies or stands on things. It's always been kind of confusing to me that some are voted in and some are appointed, I think we should just do away with that and choose one or the other.

The officer told me that I just need to bring proof of insurance to him and show it to him at 9 am and he'd show the prosecutor and they'd drop the charges. But I still need to take the day off from work and drive there.

As for picking on the government instead of just the VDMV is because ... the police officer was following the laws put forth by the bozos in Richmond and even though he knew it was stupid he had to take my driver's license and all that shit away. It wasn't the federal government, though we could get into a great discussion about that too.

Most judges I have encontered on the District level seem to have an almost unanimous disgust for both bureaucracy and insitutionalized incompetence; if you can show that the DMV made a blunder, and that you had shown proof of insurance to the officer on the scene, and can document your oout of pocket costs for having to appear due to an error, it is possible you can be compensated for that. Again, it will all depend on the judge. You may also be directed to small claims court.
