So I'm seeing all the coverage of New Orleans being evacuated, and I'm wondering if G.W. will get credit for this, or will the local government get the kudos?

Well, there was this very same evacuation last time. This time it is getting all of the coverage because of the aftermath last time around.

The buses are available ahead of time this time around.

You don't get Kudos for doing what needs to be done.

More than likely they will all be asked "Why the fuck didnt you do this last time?"

Learning from mistakes is all well and good, but trial and error in a realm where people lose their lives is unacceptable.

Yep, GW gets the credit due for this evacuation as with Katrina the response to help people was non-existent but Halliburton and Blackwater made some good bucks.

His credit comes from the fact that Ray Nagin and the citizens of NO and Louisiana have come to realize that they are on their own when it comes to federal assistance.

My prediction of the future.

The GOP will pat themselves on the back for this saving of american lives and preservation of a nations great city.

Then Barak will ask McCain, why wasnt this done the first time.

McCain will stumble into some canned response...

Democrats win.

I must be laboring under a misconception. I always thought it ws the local and state government's responsibility to handle the evacuation proceedures, and it was the Federal Government's responsibility to help in the clean up and recovery.....

The problem was our ex-Governor Blanco..... Jindal has got this all covered ..... his press conferences are all encompassing....... shit load of help is already set up.

Also, the people are taking this seriously and getting the fuck out..... on there own.......

I didn't realize Nagin was still mayor until I saw the news tonight. How'd he dodge responsibility for Katrina? I thought part of the lack of prep came from him?I must be laboring under a misconception. I always thought it ws the local and state government's responsibility to handle the evacuation proceedures, and it was the Federal Government's responsibility to help in the clean up and recovery.....FEMA and DHS proved they are worthless during Katrina, and once local efforts were not enough the federal government utterly failed to act in a timely fashion. The clean up was pretty shady too, and my understanding is that unless you live in New Orleans or another high profile area, there wasn't much assistance with cleanup. Feds job or not, when lives are on the line you don't screw around.

Blanco and Negin shoulder a fair amount of the blame on the last one. Both underplayed the situation and refused to ask for help (because Feds were republicans?).

Blanco is gone, and Negin learned from his mistakes.

Yes it is state/local to evacuate and the Feds to clean up once it's declared a disaster area.

Folks like to smudge the lines, place the blame on the Feds but we all seem to forget that states have a seperation of power and bear responsibility for intial plans/reactions.

FEMA was out and out fucked up ;(

Heh Brownie was a mistake of course, but the initial issue wasn't his to control/dictate.

Credit/blame in response to Katrina/Gustav should rightly go to the locals. From all reports Negin and his Gov absolutely took charge this time and got the ball rolling way ahead of time.

Negin this time has a Governor who is interested more in serving the people than political aspirations.

If I remember correctly the Governor (blanco) didn't ask for help until it was too late. Jindal didn't make that mistake. Jindal benefitted (is that a word?) from Blanco's blunders and had stuff in place before the wind would fly a kite.

Many neighboring states sent a really good amount of help. The worst thing about this hurricane was the power outages. The last one was flooding. Its a problem but imo not quite as bad.

Jindal handled it well and is still handling it well.
