View Full Version : Hardball laffer!

I actually spit out my shrimp scampi tonight as I listened to the asinine former Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter on Hardball tonight ask, 'if President Obama can have his Navy sharpshooters shoot three men in the head to free one hostage, why shouldn't we be able to waterboard terrorists?'.

It is getting beyond ridiculous the manner in which these folks are circling around Cheney and his comments regarding the torture of prisoners and his "outrage" at the current Attorney General wanting to investigate for possible criminality, and becoming even more disgusting than Cheney in their efforts to support the former Veep.

Listening to this silly shit, and watching the bullshit they are pulling at the town hall meetings distorting the health care debate into Limbaugh/Beck talking points, I can only hope that the Republican party will continue it's implosion and hopefully leave some room following their demise for the conservatives of the country to finally have a say.

Hear ya loud and clear man!!, Cheney calling Holders investigation as a political stunt means?....Violating the Geneva conventions a philosphical dispute?
Seems like those ilk look at things like the Law much like Capt. barbarosa looked at the Pirate code, more like "guide lines".

But, we waterboard our own troops ,and it makes them stronger and doesnt harm them, so its ok right? Sure, if you think we "waterboard" our own troops the same as we "waterboard" an "arab terrorist."

But Osg, where is your commentary on the former Congressman's comment? There was nothing said at all about Mathews saying anything, so his credibility has nothing to do with what a former Republican Congressman said on his show.

Please, share your thoughts on what Duncan Hunter had to say. I really am interested on your take on that statement.

Rush uses big words sometimes Osg.

Stick to Fox and Friends so you don't get confused.

I will as long as you promise to keep on reading such pearls of wisdom such as dailyKOS and Huffington.../snicker.

It's true though that Chris Matthews is basically the liberal Bill O'Reilly. He goads and badgers people into impossible situations and/or heated responses, then yells over them if they actually make a reasonable attempt to debate coherently.

Ironically, anything he coerces out of people with those tactics is as about as credible as a confession under duress of "enhanced" interrogation.

Being interviewed by Chris Matthews is the equivilant of being waterboarded? BRILLIANT!

It is easy to sit back and say "oh, but Mathews does this or that". I have not heard anyone say they saw this interview, though. I did. The statement was not a result of badgering. Mathews asked if Hunter supported Cheney's comments on torture, and Hunter replied with his idiocy regarding Obama having three men shot in the head for the rescue of one hostage.

I am curious why there is no commentary on Hunter's remarks, but instead folks want to talk about the host of the show. If I had only offered the quote without mentioning where I heard it, how differently would it be viewed, I wonder.

Probably because a) you didn't link or show us the clip and no one feels like hunting it down, b) no one cares what Hunter thinks or says to begin with, or c) they have seen it and noticed that you conveniently misquoted him in a way that changed the spirit of his statement.

Take your pick.

You quoted:

if President Obama can have his Navy sharpshooters shoot three men in the head to free one hostage, why shouldn't we be able to waterboard terrorists?

He actually said:

If you can shoot three pirates through the head to save one hostage, why can't you waterboard the guy that killed 3,000 Americans to get information on new plans to hit this country?

The comparison he was drawing in that quote was not anywhere near as broad as you implied with "terrorists".

Not that he's right about that narrow comparison either. Waterboarding is stupid. Things like that are more likely to coerce someone into saying what they think you want them to than produce useful information.

lol even though I disagree with him... he kinda has a point now that I am seeing the real quote.

Assuming of course that those we 'interview' are actually guilty, have been tried through due process, and any of the information gained is ever demonstrated to be of actual use - all elements currently lacking in evidence in the current debate.

Versus, you know, armed assailants who attacked a vessel without provocation, with weapons, and kidnapped a citizen of a foreign country who were killed in an action which clearly saved the noted kidnapped individual.

The new and improved quote doesnt seem any better for me. Where is the line then? If he only kills 2 Americans do we still get information on new plans to hit this country. He only included the number 3,000 for some sort of justification and to gain outrage. Also, you can't draw a comparisson to a persons life in immediate danger aka held up in a raft at gun point, and a perceived/actual terrorist being tortured.

But would making 3 pirates watch Chris Matthews be worse than shooting them in the head?

Someone needs to look up "clear and present danger" -- it's more than a bad Clancy novel.
