Howdy folks
Was wondering if anyone here was familiar with troubleshooting PS3's, especially the older ones?
The model number I have is the CECHE01. It's the 80GB unit with 4 USB drives, built in card reader and backwards compatibility.
It was given to me by a friend who bought a new slim and said if I could fix it, I could have it.
The main menu runs great, DVD's too. Blu Ray games only played a few minutes before locking up and Blu Ray movies wouldn't even pick up.
I used a BluRay Drive cleaner and, if I shut the system down completely, I can normally get a Blu Ray Movie or Game started, but again it locks up anywhere from 30 seconds in to a few minutes in.
I've taken the system apart, cleaned the lens and blew out any dust that might have been in there (surprisingly not as dirty as I thought it'd be) and tried again with the same results.
Could it be the drive lens or could it be the controller board? And if it's either (I'm leaning towards the Drive Lens array see http://cgi.ebay.ca/PS3-KEM-400AAA-Blue-Ray-Laser-Lens-KEM-400A-Deck-/220751692802?pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item3365d38402 ) Does said person know a place I can get either any cheaper than around $65 US including shipping?
Putting the thing in isn't a problem, it's not a hard system to disassemble and reassemble, just getting hands on parts is a pain.
