Damn, my 6month trial to HBO just expired last week =/ Or I coulda helped you out, recording shows has become so much more convient with On demand services ^^.
(Which I'm a big fan of now), I'm planning to resubscribe to Hbo Next billing cycle, (sept 28th), if you don't have it by then email me and I'll record it for you.

I'm about to watch it (and record) at 1am. I don't think my TiVo has any network connectivity, like the newer ones, though.

Included: NZB file for Rome, S01E01, currently available in alt.binaries.multimedia - a group that should have at least 2-3 day retention on your ISP's newsserver.
It's currently on news.east.cox.net and news.west.cox.net.
Pars included.
If you lack ANY news-server access, let me know, and I'll download AND upload it.

And while I'm at it, Ryb, thanks for adding NZB support. Now, an icon, please :)

Here seem to be a few:

Or, you could go with what Agent or NewsLeecher (http://www.newsleecher.com/?id=download) make them.
I strongly recommend NewsLeecher and then setting it up for your "free" servers has high priority, then using a premium server like EasyNews (http://www.easynews.com/) (because they have more bandwidth than I do at work :) )

I may need to check it out. A friend said it seemed to be about sex; then his wife said "I don't think women shaved like that back then."

What day/time is this on again?

Well, praise be to Allah that they chose aesthetics over accuracy in that department.

I just watched part of it again, and I noticed something odd that I hadn't noticed the first time.
At one point, Caesar ordered a clerk to give Mark Antony an amount of gold "and not a penny more". Did they use pennies in 52 BC? I know they had coins, but I thought pennies didn't show up till hundreds of years later.

IIRC Romans used a variety of coinage, none of them named the penny. They might have refered to such as copper. From what I've seen of the series, it's not remotely accurate in detail and barely in general.

I'm not sure they spoke English either, but I could be mistaken.

"Thwow him to the fwoor!"
<3 Mel Brooks (and he shares my birthday :) )
Actually, what I've seen of the teasers for 'Rome' looks less like 'History of the World', and more like the torrid 'bodice ripper' romance novels some of my friends used to clandestinely trade as teenagers... This definitely seems to fit into the same shameless guilty pleasure category. I'll take a trip to the Vomitorium and the baths please...

Nydia

"Bring me a small lyre!!"
"I didn't do it! The check is in the mail! I was out of town!"
"Not that kind of lyre!"
Still a classic imho...

You know, I think the worst part about it was how they had Octavian spell out the plot to keep the mouth-breathing crowd up to speed. That cheapened the whole thing a lot.

I saw a "Making of" show. They said that the first 2 or 3 episodes are going to be moving at a break neck speed and are more mostly background and introduction.
After that it settles into the normal HBO pace of things, slow and taking its time.
Episode 1 moved too fast.

Favorite scene so far?
Mine
Went something like:
"He's lying, torture him"
"Um, I've never actually tortured anyone before, we have specialists for that!"
"Oh, um, well, then cut off his thumbs"
"And I thought you would be the one who wouldn't be able to handle this"
(screams commence).

The best part is that one of the 2 people in that scene is like a 12 year old kid. Otherwise it wouldnt be nearly as good.

If you haven't seen it, the official HBO site has some pretty nice background stuff here: http://www.hbo.com/rome/behind/rome_revealed/rome.html
