Virus/Worm writers. Those little fucking cocks. Writing these things in their parents basements on their 30th birthday because no one would go with them to the prom in high school. Little shits. We need tougher laws against this type of crap. I don't care HOW insecure Microsoft shit is, it is NO reason to go and cripple the WORLD in terms of email/network connectivity. I for one would like to see these nerds sent to pound me in the ass prision for a year for each day their worms screw everyone else over.
And riding that one's tail, is morons who never patch their systems. I wake up this morning, stumble into work at 6:45, check my email, and out of my normal barrage of spam, I get 87 copies of that "gibe/automavt" virus.
PATCH YOUR GOD DAMN SYSTEMS AND RUN AV SOFTWARE DAMMIT!
The worst part about this is, that its my email address for my corporate contacts at CISCO, IBM, CDW, Micro warehouse etc. You'd figure these places would keep up with the latest patches and defenses.

Good theory, but if no one would exploit it, M$ wouldn't fix it.

Yah Marz... I hear that. Get this, I live on a tech campus, it's a tech school... and we have so many problems, because 90% of the students haven't kept their PCs patched, and most public computers haven't been kept patched either.
Personally, I kept my PCs patched so while my computers are fine, I still have to deal with the router issues due to how considerate my fellow students and our network technicians are >:

Wanna shut down a worm? ACL, baby.

The bad part is, one of our call centers created an ACL to filter the new worms, but the instant between removing the old one and pasting in the new one, Blaster made it into the center.
They were down the whole day :lol

My entire school district shut down their computers for over a week after that last one. Tech's were going around patching computers one at a time...which drives me nuts. I used to work in IT, we patched in advance, and most of our software let us roll out the patches from the server automatically. So because of out of date IT and short staffing we had no computers (attendance, grades, email, records) and eventually even lost voicemail. Fun stuff. Lots of angry parents called.
I'm with Marz. Beat the snot out of the brats writing these things, and follow that up with liberal abuse for people who don't patch correctly.

Sledgehammer to the hands is my preferred punishment. Then off for the ass pounding.

I've never seen the big deal over AV software, simple preventative knowledge is a ton more effective, I havnt gotten a virus in the 15 years I've been online.
I just can't seem to comprehend what these people do that they get them so often that any remotely basic computer user should know not to do..

You've been lucky. There are viruses and such out there that will still get in even if you take all reasonable precautions aside from using antivirus software (especially if, for one reason or another, you're locked into a particular operating system or program). Yes many viruses require someone to do something stupid to spread, but others take advantage of newly discovered software flaws that allow arbitrary code to be executed and do not depend on user actions.
Also consider that the most effective viruses are designed NOT to let the user know that they are present, allowing them to spread before they can be removed. Your system could very well be infected with a non-destructive virus, and you might never notice. Really it's just common sense to use basic antivirus software if your computer is connected to the internet a significant portion of the time.
