Anyone here ever had surgery for a hernia? I'd like to know what I'm in for Found out about a half hour ago that I am going to be put under the knife soon, and obviously I'm a bit nervous.

Assuming abdominal and not lower abdominal (groin) they typically go in through the belly button and put a patch inside and then stitch the muscle up. You'll be off your feet for a day or two and light stress only for a few weeks, but nothing serious.
A lower abdominal is worse and you'll probably be off your feet for a week at least.

Basically part of my bowel is protruding from my navel.

Hope you feel better soon. My only experience with that was my son at age three, due to a testicle not dropping; apparently not that uncommon, but it causes (or can cause) a hernia.
Anyway, follow the medical instructions, and tell your wife to stop suggesting Kama Sutra positions.

I don't want to look like Joan Rivers lol. Though if they wanted to remove some belly fat and transplant it down a bit, I could go for that!

Oh it's not getting done for a few weeks at least (my consult with the surgeon is on Fri the 18th).
I probably had just gone to bed when you sent a tell. I logged off about 11 last night.

I had the same surgery done in the Spring Taleran. My hernia was right on my belly button, looked like an outie instead of the innie it was supposed to be.
The surgery and recovery room was easy. You will probably only be under a local so you won't have to deal with post op. I was in and out of the hospital in 6 hours.
I spent a good 3 days in bed before venturing over to my computer. Laying down and sitting up is going to be pinchy for at least a week. Just lay back, watch some movies and enjoy the percocetes(sp?).
You can pretty much eat anything you want after you get home but don't try lifting anything over 15 pounds until you go in for you follow up.
The incision scarred over in a couple of weeks and the follow up visit to the surgeon confirmed that everything went well.
Good luck and treat the nurses kindly, they are the one who do most of the work =)
Cheers,

They are putting me under, at least that's what I've been told so far. And I'd prefer it that way; I am not a good patient. Thanks for the info though.

I'm with you there Taleren, only surgery I've ever had was a vasectomy and I begged them to put me under.
They wouldn't tho they did give me the full bottle of laughing gas and a good local followed up by good pain pills.
Ahhhhhh the gas, the gas!!!

I've been given nitrous before on a dental visit. It didn't work on me. They kept giving me more and more, and it did nothing at all to me.

I had an outpatient operation some time back. There is a new anesthia (sp god I can't spell medical words) that is fast acting but wears off really fast. And it was the only time I'd been under where I didn't feel sickly when I woke up.
Good luck to you and hopefully you're not allergic to Percocet ;)
