WASHINGTON - Arizona Cardinal strong safety-turned soldier Pat Tillman, who left the team to enlist in the Army after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has been killed in Afghanistan. He was 27.

When Tillman enlisted in the Army he walked away from a 3-year, $3.6 million contract extension with the Cardinals. The decision drew nationwide headlines, although he did not seek the headlines.

Tillman made the decision after returning from his honeymoon with wife, Marie, in 2002, joining the elite Army rangers with his brother Kevin.

Heard that first thing this morning. He put a face to the war. Really though, there are what, so far 800 or so Pat Tillmans? Those guys are putting it all on the line. We can't thank them enough for their efforts. They all will be remembered.

Kinda puts everything in perspective.

He is a real American hero, we should keep fighting strong so our soldiers don't die in vain.

A very honorable person.
