Osg, 15 years ago, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the band Nirvana, blew his head off with a shotgun.
Personally, I have little sympathy for the man. Who I feel sorry for are the people he left behind, that had to pick up the pieces and try to go on with their lives. Except for Courtney Love. She is a complete waste of a zygote.

Some people don't make an influence based upon their personal lives or political views. Otherwise most influential musicians, artists etc would never have any space at all in the collective memory of society. They serve as a window in time. People such as Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix, John Bonham, John Lennon, Bon Scott and the list goes on lived impulsive, selfish lives. And yet their music struck a chord with a generation as being a soundtrack for a defining memory. That is why their passings, be it an event that probably should be deplored for robbing their loved ones of their company since it was indeed a selfish act of character weakness that lead to their parting this earth in an untimely manner, be considered a milestone as a generation passes on their own journey through time.
People are quick to forget what made them who they are and what was going on at the time when such events were transpiring, even if its something as shallow as what was on the radio at the time. So before you critisize an artist for how they left the earth, be thankful for what they did while they were still here.
My pop can tell me what was playing on the radio at the time the news broke of the Pearl Harbor Attack, D-Day, Bay of Pigs, The Kennedy Assassination, Watergate, The Fall of Saigon, and the list goes on along with smells and sights but never exact dates even though they are recorded in history. The average human memory just doesn't process information any other way.

What else should I be/All apologies...
While the hysteria over Cobain's death was very much overblown in my mind (I knew of several random friends/acquaintance who had no personal connection to him whatsoever who for some reason were deeply, dare I say pathologically, affected by his death, which I found... creepy), there's no question that his music struck at the heart of the emptiness of the American life-of-surfaces and to that dark night of the soul that every one of us stares down the barrel of at some point in our lives. For that, we owe him a debt of gratitude and the world is poorer for his having chosen to leave it so soon.

Nydia

Lum brought up many memories with that post, as I recall well where I was for many of those deaths. But he also makes a great point about the contributions made by some of those folks, and how they impacted others.
If you ever get a chance, I strongly suggest watching the Monterey Pop Festival (available from Netflix) to see what that generation looked like. It introduced many to the likes of Janis Joplin and Ravi Shankar.
A moment that always has me catch my breath is watching Mama Cass Elliot as she watches Janis Joplin perform "Ball and Chain"; she is simply blown away by this raw, powerful little woman and the forcefulness with which she approaches "entertaining" people.
As for Kurt Cobain, /shrug.
