ok.. I was given complete control over the honeymoon's destination (YAY!) and I'm not sure where to go.. and was hoping some of you could help me :)

spending a few days in london before the wedding (so that's out for the honeymoon), then heading up to Edinburgh for a few days and the wedding. oh yah, the wedding is in June... and we're american, and I'm pretty sure we'll stick out like tourists :-P

We've never been to any of these, so I don't really know much about them.. but currently, I'm trying to decide between
Sweden: ?
Switzerland: ?
Norway: ?
Holland: ?
Scottish Highlands: we're already in scotland, kind of convenient but doesn't seem like much to do..
Paris: lots to do, not sure it's about a honeymoon in a "big city".

any other suggestions? between the 2 of us, we know French, Spanish, Japanese, German (however, neither of us have any interest in going to germany), Latin and a few other languages with just enough to barely get by..

Please.. help me decide! hehe.. what's there to do? what should we see? perhaps even what we should see while we're there. I think, ideally we'd like a country that was primarily english because while we've got a number of languages covered between the two of us.. there's very little overlap between what we both know and don't want the other to feel left out or dependent.

thanks! :)
all help is appreciated.

hehe. nope.. no italian.. keep meaning to learn it, but never find the time..

I assume you'd suggest italy? would not knowing italian be a huge problem? and if not, where in italy would you suggest?

thanks,

Yeah, went to Italy last summer with my family. Best place I've ever been. We went to Venice, and then stayed on Lake Como. We'll probably go again for Rome, but I wouldn't try to see everything in one trip, there's just too much.

Venice was amazing, so much to see. Beautiful buildings and wonderful food, and you never run out of things to do.

Lake Como was more of a relaxation spot for us. We stayed in a small town called Bellagio, and then took a ferry to Como for the shopping.

Most people seemed to speak English, but since my mother is fluent in Italian it didn't matter too much to us anyways.

Italy is great and if you know spanish well enough you can get by. Rome is great place to stay and depending how long you are there most other cities fairly easily accessible by 1-2 day side trips.
Went to Rome when we pulled into Livorno and Naples while in the Navy and by far it was the best place I was able to go. On the short time we were there was able to see alot and going there a second time got to see alot I missed first time. But if you are going on a honeymoon depends what you want out of honeymoon (stay in and have fun or plan on sightseeing too). The place is rich in history and art and all withina fairly small are. Plus if you get express trains Pisa is easily reachable for a day trip, from pisa Venice is easily reachable then a train back to Rome. Also Naple is not too far away but not as much there.

Head to the Balearic Islands for a few weeks, then take another week to explore the country that interests you most. I'd go for Greece or Austria, but that's just me.

I really enjoyed Austria. Folks were in the military and we went there quite a few times to go skiing. Definitely a nice place to visit. Italy was pretty decent too, although I wasn't a huge fan of Venice.

Try Spain. It's been less overdone than a lot of the usual places.

Venice is one of the most famous place for honeymoons, surprised you guys didn't mention it, it's more romantic than most of the other destinations, depends what you're looking for though.

dont go to greece unless your are willing to spend lots of dollars for nothing .... its almost expensive like germany and greek hotels are totally rotten and overpriced ...
greece has very nice places to stay if you keep away from the big tourist nests .
Getting a good price in smaller hotels & guesthouses depends also very much on the mood of the owner and your own abilities to negioate. well that applies for most places in the mediterran area.
.erm and the the food is excellent .
But its far away from a bargain since the invention of the euro currency.
Almost every greek person i meet talk english & german more or less fluent.
I was in greece 2x last year and after i recounted all the money i spend i found out i could have paid a ticked for same money somewhere to southeast asia or south america and stay there for a month or two.

i would also recommend portugal or east europe ,like czech, poland or hungary and of course the baltic sea area is very beautiful in summer : poland, sweden, finnland , germany and the baltic republics (latvia, estonia, lithuania).

Many of my friends have recommended Italy. They recommend that you know a bit of Italian, but they loved it.

Myself, I just got back from Jamaica.

thank you all for the advice :)

where in sweden would you recommned? what's there to do there? (and what's the weather like in June?)

I think austria/greece however nice, are off the list. I've heard too many mixed reviews about greece to chance it on a honeymoon..

Venice and italy sounds nice.. but I'm still concerned that not being able to communicate will be a problem..

anyone know much about Holland? (or have all the dutch been banned? hehe)

thanks,

Fyi, I was also given complete control over the honeymoon.

Then one day at work, I got a call. The honeymoon had been taken care of! heh.

Amsterdam is nice, even if you aren't into weed or hookers. Lucern (sp?) in Switzerland is also very nice. I had the most fun in Berlin though... lots of the tourist crap but also alot of local nightlife.
