When some random person comes running up to you and inspects you without asking does it annoy you?

Am I wrong to believe that this is the real life equivalent of chasing somebody down in the middle of the street and nearly turning their shirt inside-out to see what brand of clothing they are wearing?

Why is this always accompanied by "link ur weapons plz" or some inane demand like that?

Well a Magelo profile is a useful tool for guildmembers and officers to know more about how their guildmates are equiped so they can work out drop assignments and whatnot and is entirely out of character. I love the Magelo profile much more for being able to look at flags, tradeskills, and AAs than for any kind of equipment it shows me.

If some dude came up to me on the street and stuck his hand down my pants to look at the tag on my boxers to see if they're Joe Boxers I'd beat his ass. I don't see how it is any different if someone runs up to you and inspects you in EQ. If I were on a PvP server I'd give them a good jab with a knife for it. :/

I never EVER say no if someone asks me, but if they don't then I hide and sneak out of their range because its ultra-rude.

The EverQuest game engine allows you to look at other people's stuff. Get over it, turn off the message, or play another game. You don't have many other choices.

KarrmaEvershadow
07-13-2003, 09:45 PM
Having a link to a magelo profile in a message board signiture is something that 90% of the people here do. Message boards are out of character forums where PLAYERS chat. Its not like some character is running up to me and sticking their hand down my pants to see what kind of boxers I wear. Its different.

Now if you're done being a sarcastic troll, I'm wondering if your post had an actual point in it?

People are only able to see my Magelo profile because I post it and I post it because I don't mind people looking at it. If someone in game asked me if they could inspect me, sure. Thats fine. Otherwise it wasn't something that I wanted them to do.

Bamdar MacBaked
07-13-2003, 09:53 PM
I think his point was that you are being hyper sensitive about something that's completely rediculous. For instance, he is not reaching down your pants looking at a label, he's clicking a mouse button in a game, god forbid. Get over it.

I was always proud of the things I earned for my character. I never cared if people inspected me.

I don't see how inspecting could be considered rude... it's a function of the game. Its as rude as sending someone a tell or using the /wave emote.

"Its the same as running up to someone on the street and bla bla bla..."

I've heard that a million times, and every time I hear it it makes me laugh. If by inspecting your character I could see personal information about you, THEN maybe it would be the same. You act like your personal privacy is being invaded. Its not. Your character is pixels, on a server probably 2000 miles away from where you really live. Its not you, and besides that, it hurts nothing. If you don't like seeing the message, turn it off.

Sheesh... I'd hate to see you people who are bothered by inspecting on a REAL issue, like Carnivore.

Akom of Cazic Thule
07-13-2003, 10:17 PM
Actually... I should have worded it "Your character is data on a server... 1's and 0's". Pixels would be referring the the actual displaying of the image of your character on the screen.

KarrmaEvershadow
07-13-2003, 10:24 PM
Its 1's and 0's, true. Maybe I'm just the sort of person that believes that some real life etiquette should apply to characters in EverQuest as well... meaning you don't just run up to someone and check out what they're wearing. Its... well... weird. :)

I mean, if I ran up to you on the street and was like "Hey, fuck you!" that would be rude. Saying "Hey, fuck you!" in EverQuest isn't any less rude just because its 1's and 0's, right?

Alfax
07-13-2003, 10:41 PM
I think the point isn't whether or not you're being inspected. It's that people are hoping that others will have the common courtesy to ask if they may inspect your gear. This becomes a matter of manners and overall if that's what you are hoping for in game it ain't gonna happen.

Yes it's a common courtesy to ask someone before looking at their gear.

No it's not a requirement to see someone's gear.

And bottom line is it's not worth getting pissed off over but if it does bother you make a note of that person's name and put them on you're "No help for joo" list

I have two of those.....

"No help for joo once" and "No help for joo ever"

Just my 2 copper worth

Alfax

Chand01
07-13-2003, 10:53 PM
dunno about common courtesy

i always figured it was simply another feature of everquest

i guess if you expect people to ask first, its your own problem

most people dont ask first, and it has no impact on anything but your chat window, so why get worked up over it

but, again... thats just my opinion

I got inspected a couple times when I was running around with my little fire elemental pet. Someone's like, "wait, if you're a mage, how the fuck do you have the wizard epic?"

First time ever got to say, "l337 h4x." 8(

But yeah, honestly Karm, if you think it's rude you should really take your magelo out of your sig because the CB board has everyone's mag linked to their name on the members list for member/officer use.

Besides, your gear doesn't suck ~that~ bad.

LummusL
07-14-2003, 12:11 AM
My gear is about 2 years out of date. At this point its more of an honor, like when you are 30 years old and someone at the counter selling you beer still feels you are young enough looking to be carded. It could be an annoyance, but its all good.

Now if I was getting inspected every minute, well that would get old. Perhaps its time to go /anon and color your armor some generic color, like black or silver so it doesn't look like anything special. People are going to look at that guild tag first off and if you are from some extremely advanced crew, expect to be bothered alot. Price of fame, right?

canizi

Being inspected is like looking closely to what someone is wearing while walking down the street or mall. I will have to admit to having to look for a long time occasionally to read some t-shirts.

The only time I feel offended being inspected is when a beg for something accompanies the inspect. The auto-inspect feature is on or off. There is no easy way to make the inspect a command to be entered that I know of.

I am actually more disappointed when people are /anon or /role, but that is something that I also understand for the higher level chanters, druids, wizards, shamen and clerics because of the unsolicited requests for clarity, ports, SoW, and rezes. I have also had higher levels inspect my characters and then, on their own, bestowed some better equipment on me.

For the most part I think that players are good. There are a few bad people playing but they are like all other parts of our lives. I will often do run by buffing when I am in a position to help, but I will usually ignore "Buffs plz" or "can I have some money". I have to agree with some of the other people that a well formed and politely asked question will get more from me than the demands and rude begging.

Why not just turn the inspect message off? That way you don't really know when someone is inspecting you.

I don't think I have had my inspect message on since not too long after I started playing eq and found it could be turned off. Sure there are times when I can tell people are inspecting me just from them running up to me stoping for a few seconds and then proceeding to ask me to link my weapon, item, etc. It really doesn't bother me though unless they start bugging me to give them stuff.

Carnivore does freak me out. A lot.

As to inspecting, it's a social issue to me. At least say hi...last I checked it was a social game, it's kinda odd when someone runs up and inspects you without saying a word. No, it doesn't affect me personally if they don't ask first, but it's so darned easy and such a common issue, would it really be that hard to do? Or to at least say hi, bow, or wave?

It's like all the groups I join these days where everyone just sits and kills silently, without a word, then complains about how boring the game is. What ever happened to speaking to other players?

Karrma, Palimax had a point... Your complaining about someone looking at your equipment... Nothing else, if theres a problem with that it makes no sence that you have a Magelo profile linked on these forums, yes 90% of the people here do it, but the rest of them wouldn't go whining about it either, only you did... Casus Belli people post here, but this isn't the first place they would look to find your magelo profile im sure.

chasing someone down and turning their shirt inside out is different because each clothing brand has its own thing EQ doesnt offer that specially with color dyes now you dont know whats what so it forces you to inspect. Should be happy to be who you are and what you have if you want to compare this to a RL life style. Dont be afraid to show off a little when people take interest in how you dress and what you equip yourself with. Just my opinion of course :)

MY FUCKING BUSINESS TO DO SO. Trying to have a discussion is fucking impossible with you people. I don't put it in my sig so that people in guilds I may be in can see my Magelo, I KNOW they don't have to look hard for it. Its just something that is done as a courtesy for ANYBODY who wants to take a look. Its out of character.

If someone wants to look around in random Magelos to see who is flagged for what and send emails around asking "Hey, can you help me with such and such raid?" then this will help them.

That is just ONE example of the multiple uses for having a Magelo posted in your sig. So back the FUCK off.

Don't fucking bitch about MY OPINION on this you whiney pussies, have a little substance to back up how YOU feel about it since this topic is about YOU, NOT ME. Do you have nothing better to do than sit on your asses and point a finger screamin, "u r teh hypocrite!!1" Because they're two different fucking things. Dear Karrma:

Don't let these folks get you down - you have a valid point, and your view is shared by more people than it would seem from the evidence here. It all depends on whether you view your character as being an entity that has its own right to privacy, and how much you feel that EQ is a 'social' game, I suppose. I don't like being inspected either (and also have a Magelo profile); when folks inspect me without asking I will send them a tell: It is polite to *ask* before inspecting someone', and usually they will apologize. If they start spamming me with inspects or abuse about it, I put them on ignore. It clues me in to who the jerks are, and makes life much more peaceful that way... :)

If I'm guilty of 'pussying out', its mainly due to the fact that middle age seems to have mellowed me out about things that would have left me bristling and with something to prove in years past, alas. Ahh, the old topic returns.

The "inspecting without asking is rude" argument stems from PVP games, where inspection is generally a precursor to a ganking attempt. It has no validity in EQ. It is nothing like going through your purse or pockets in real life. It is the only equivalent that we have in EQ of "checking your score" or your progress in teh game, other than perhaps guild tag. For example, if a group asks me to join, and I see that MT is using a Lamentation, I need to decline...

Please, let the inspecting is rude thing die. Particularly if you don't understand the origins of it.

Nydia Ywalmoriel
07-14-2003, 10:26 PM
I disagree, Santerre. I also came from a PvP mud where /looking someone up and down (it was text, and your inventory could be seen) was frequently a precursor to an attempted ganking. That doesn't mean, however, that just because most of us in EQ are non-pvp, that one doesn't have a reasonable expectation of 'privacy' in the game. EQ has the benefit of being a graphical game; you can see much of one's equipment just by looking at someone without pulling on their shirt collar to look at the label, so to speak. I'm usually happy to link my gear if someone asks about it, or to let folks inspect if they ask to. If that seems a bit touchy or prudish, so be it, but I find driveby inspections annoying, particularly because they often lead to questions like: 'Can I have ur XXX?'

There is definitely a correlation between inspecting and following up with ridicule or annoying begging. It may not be strong, but it's enough for some people to be irritated.

I make it a habit to inspect and ask the hp of all the tanks I group with. The only ones that seem to mind are the ones that have less hp than I do =((

I dislike quoting the trolls to make a point, but since I've been called a troll myself this thread, I thought I'd get good use out of it.Everquest was designed to let you inspect without asking. If you don't like it... TOUGH SHITYeah, that's it allrighty. Short of running around all bothered and ass-hurt, there isn't anything I can do from stopping people from inspecting me. I could turn off the message, a live in ignorant bliss, I suppose, but that wouldn't cause nearly as much of a ruckus as coming to these boards and making a Jenny Jones'esque topic like

Tomorrow on Jenny Jones: Inspections, Like 'em?

The inspecting thing bothers me.

"Oh nos! Elazul's getting bugged my something so stupid"

Damn right I am. It's like I said to Karrma in guildchat...when someone inspects you it's like someone walking up to you in public, grabbing your shirt collar and looking at the tag.

Not only is it annoying (because most people seem to have trouble with it and have to inspect-spam because they can't right click just once) but it's also lame because you get the damn message popping up on your screen and distracting you or spamming you or both.

Do I bitch about it? No, well right now I am but I don't at the time. Will I get over it in a second? Yes. But is it still annoying? Yes.

What's my point? Eskimos should never wear purple fur coats.

Being annoyed by beggars/link askers is understandable, but being annoyed from inspection...
Hello, use /inspect off!!
OH NOO0Z!! I cant insespct anym0reZ!!1

Maybe that's the real problem, I don't want to be bugged by people who inspect me, but still I want to be able to inspect others...

Did I mention I don't mind at all being inspected?

I find driveby inspections annoying, particularly because they often lead to questions like: 'Can I have ur XXX?'

Different problem entirely. If I come up to you and inspect you, it's not likely I am gonna ask for anything. It would be far more likely for me to say "hey, would you use XXX?"

I love these game to real life comparisons.

I suppose shooting someone in Counter-Strike is like walking up to something and throwing an axe into their skull.

If the spam bothers you, you can turn the message off. That's one complaint out the window.

It's not like someone grabbing your shirt and checking the collar, because inspecting doesn't take anyone's time. Asking me if you can see my shit is far more annoying because then I ~do~ get 'spam' -and- I'm obligated to reply or I become the asshole.

its not like someone is comming up to you and grabbing your shirt
its like someone looking at you from a far(if you have message on, its like they tell you they are looking), cause it causes you no stress and they don't interfer with you at all, someone grabbing my pants, would interfer with what i was doing at the moment. but inspectionms don't interfer with shit except certain peoples mindset, and if someone came up to me and said fuck you, of course thats gonna be the same, a insult is a insult, but its not the same as inspecting cause a inspection is not a sexual assault case

ease up and enjoi life more

My answer to this topic came to me when turning with my mouse and inspecting jackasses I had no interest in inspecting and saying oops sorry. No one ever said anything about "it's polite to inspect blah blah blah" when I said this I knew how to get around their whining. Now when ever I want to inspect someone and I'm feeling a lazy I just inspect and say oops sorry and no one bugs me... May be "pussying out" but at least I don't have to listen to anyone whine about being offended. *shrug*

Its 1's and 0's, true. Maybe I'm just the sort of person that believes that some real life etiquette should apply to characters in EverQuest as well... meaning you don't just run up to someone and check out what they're wearing. Its... well... weird.

i know im late and i only read the first page of posts, but im bored so sue me.

if your comparing it to "real life" i dont need to to undress you to find out you wearing a nike shirt or blue jean pants. inspecting someone only gives you very little info on what they are acctually wearing. think of it this way, inspecting is verants lazy way of seeing what you are wearing with your eyes, we wouldnt need to inspect if every item had a unique look to it would we? linking them or showing them the acctually item with stats is more of what you say putting your hand down someones pants and checking the tag.

i wish there would be more things to do at my place /sigh

I wonder... Would you have even thought it was annoying to begin with if someone else hadn't bitched you out for doing it previously? Some anal asshole started this whole 'inspecting being annoying if they don't ask permission first,' on some day when he hadn't eaten his Wheaties and was in a lot of pain from the stick being so far lodged up his ass. This anal asshole was the demise of inspecting. Just a thought I felt like sharing.

Elazul Valeren
07-21-2003, 12:08 PM
Honestly, since when does a bored person just bringing up a small complaint just really to start a conversational topic become an "anal asshole"? Really.

I know Karrma didn't start the whole 'inspecting being annoying' thing but he did start the thread and his intention for starting this thread wasn't complete vehemence to scream at everyone with a giant rod sticking out of his ass. So since there was no anal assholishness involved, why flame? Well, I didnt read the ENTIRE thread so I dont know if any anal assholishness really was involved but still...

A lot of weird things bug people a little and don't bug others but when they mention it just lightly do you call them an anal asshole? Wait, maybe ya do but still I'm just saying lighten up a bit on this whole thing and go eat some wheaties without piss. Because if you stop and look at your own post it's far closer to anal than his was.

:)

ThePerfectFlaw
07-21-2003, 12:19 PM
Maybe because he/she/it is being anal?

And the asshole part came later when he/she/it started freaking out on those of us who posted our opinions an calling us trolls for pointing out he/she/it was being anal.

If I say, "How's this shirt look?" and the person says, "It makes you look fat." Should I be pissed because they commented on how the shirt looked on me? Afterall, I just wanted to know how the shirt looked.

Elazul... you're dense. I wasn't talking about Karrma being the anal asshole. I was talking about whoever yelled at him for doing it when he was a noob. Some nameless schmuck, to start this inspecting nonsense. Anyway Elazul... don't get me started on you having a problem with being inspected... I don't think you'd like what I'd have to say.

Elazul Valeren
07-23-2003, 08:47 AM
/shrug

I mentioned I didn't read the entire thread. But that doesn't make me dense, it makes me lazy. And to that I'm guilty as charged.

I just figured you were attacking Karrma over something so stupid and trivial and figured I'd say something. But it usually helps to know the full thread before ya post. But I'm too lazy to read 6 entire pages of blather and that's a good waste of my precious time that I could be wasting on other stupid shit.

And what do you have to say about my issue with inspecting? I said I hated the message because it's spam. Because people are tards and can't just click once. Where's the analness there? Or are you gonna dig far enough up my ass to find some kind of analness? Go ahead, but I warn ya I may like it...
