Obviously there are a lot of fly by night companies out there that promise the world for free, and there are probably some good values by reputable companies.

How do you know the difference? Is there a good site that 'scores' them?

I've never had a problem with Deru (hosting.deru.net/) (http://hosting.deru.net/)) as for colocation. Not cheap, but well worth the service. In my job, we bought 1/2 a rack to host our e-commerce cluster (Java servlets/JSP, Oracle), and we never had a single day of downtime. If you're in Scottsdale, AZ, they will give you a tour of the facilities. Just remember that in the web business, it's "you get what you pay for."

I've used www.webhostingtalk.com/ (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/) forums before I've switched webhosts.

Deru lives with Easynews. They have a metric assload of bandwidth. If I needed high volume, I'd go there.

I dont, I just need low cost, easy to use space to host my domain. It might be a mistake but I'm going to give the 1and1.com guys a shot, I dont think I'll have need for a lot of the obscure stuff people are complaining about and hopefully wont need too much customer service. Its free, so even if it does suck I can move without too much trouble.

I've been using that 1and1 free deal for awhile now to host my personal domain. I haven't had any trouble at all. Works as good as the $50/mo hosting it was at before...

I'm also giving 1and1 a try, and, I'm thusfar happy. I've got a skeleton of a PHP-Nuke driven site up at www.i-hack.com (http://www.i-hack.com) and so far so good. Took a little work on my part to get MySQL working correctly, but true enough, it's included and it's working.

I also have sites with www.hostsave.com (http://www.hostsave.com) and www.winsave.com (http://www.winsave.com) -- your basic $8 companies.
