View Full Version : How much money did you waste on that paper weight you call a HD TV...?

... because HD is so 21st century. One of my friends bought a Red camera, and he got it today. We took it out of the box and shot a few minutes and I'm sure I was holding in my hands the death of "HDTV". I don't even know what to do with the footage since I don't think any computers can handle it yet - but my god, what pretty pictures.

720p? 1080i? Please! We're shooting 4520i now :) And its true opticals, so instead of a camera showing an aperature range (I.E. when you put a guy in front of a window you generally see a silhouette through the camera but can see facial features with the naked eye)

I wouldn't expect 4520i to become an industry standard any time soon, but I'd be careful buying a TV that doesn't at least do 2160i any time soon unless you get a steal. From the Prism guild forums, perhaps this TV will be a good counterpart: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/63717

*edit* Also check out the price. Camera body for a Red is $17,500 or probably about $50,000 for the entire camera. A Sony HDW-F900 (what they shot Star Wars on) is double that and no other camera comes close in terms of quality *yet* And the HDW-F900 doesn't have a solid state media option so you need to have tapes and take the time to encode them and all that nonsense. There are tons of networks afraid to go HD because of increased costs, but $50,000 is about what a SD camera is costing now that Sony doesn't make BetaSP cams anymore. Good news all around!

Cool. In 8-10 years I'll have another reason to upgrade.

I don't own an HD-TV. I've got no plans to upgrade, either. I'll buy a new TV when the one I has dies.

We'll just plug the TV into our heads and the show will be whatever entertains us the most based on our internal programming.

Might make a new craze in the future, as to who's shows will be the most popular.

Aw hell, grams used to just give gramps a couple shots of Shnaaps after dinner, and sit him in front of the old front window dryer while she dried his union suits. He used to love cheering on those 'wrasslers'. :D

I just bought a 52 inch 1080p LCD for Christmas; this makes me /frowny face.

Not really! It will be years before I could afford it and frankly considering most places aren't even broadcasting in 1080p I'm still enjoying the things that do :D I love that there is something new on the horizon though!

That was all fairly tongue in cheek ... in 2009 the broadcast standard changes from 640 to 1080 pixels and that took forever. It'll be years before they concider changing it. Where 4x is ever used will probably be the giant TVs in stadiums and Times Square. What is great is that its cheap so shows like America's Most Wanted can finally go HD instead of upconverted SD on their old SD budget. For films its an alternative to film (which may not have a higher resolution than video anymore) which will generate higher quality independent films. I'm even trying to talk the company that bought my storm chasing show to go Red because it costs the same with great resolution. As anyone who uses digital images a lot will know you take a blurry 500x500 image and make it 250x250 it'll look super sharp.

But if you buy the 150" tv expect your pictures to be blurry otherwise ;)

Smell O Vision? The day I worked on Dirty Jobs was bad enough let alone living through thay again every time I watch my reel.

Worked on a lot of the various promos but the only show we did was at a chicken "farm" in Maryland.

*edit* Mike Rowe is just as genuine and nice in person as he is on the show. Its ashame he's starting to dislike the job - he's so good at it.
