... because HD is so 21st century. One of my friends bought a Red camera, and he got it today. We took it out of the box and shot a few minutes and I'm sure I was holding in my hands the death of "HDTV". I don't even know what to do with the footage since I don't think any computers can handle it yet - but my god, what pretty pictures.

720p? 1080i? Please! We're shooting 4520i now :) And its true opticals, so instead of a camera showing an aperature range (I.E. when you put a guy in front of a window you generally see a silhouette through the camera but can see facial features with the naked eye)
I wouldn't expect 4520i to become an industry standard any time soon, but I'd be careful buying a TV that doesn't at least do 2160i any time soon unless you get a steal. From the Prism guild forums, perhaps this TV will be a good counterpart: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/63717
*edit* Also check out the price. Camera body for a Red is $17,500 or probably about $50,000 for the entire camera. A Sony HDW-F900 (what they shot Star Wars on) is double that and no other camera comes close in terms of quality *yet* And the HDW-F900 doesn't have a solid state media option so you need to have tapes and take the time to encode them and all that nonsense. There are tons of networks afraid to go HD because of increased costs, but $50,000 is about what a SD camera is costing now that Sony doesn't make BetaSP cams anymore. Good news all around!
