You don't need to have pity on me Jilo, I have been playing this game for almost 4 years now and it gave me much much more than if I spent the same time watching HBO.

I gained awesome friends (in RL too, not just in-game pixels), learned a lot about people (what motivates and what moves them) and improved my English.

Don't hate the game, don't hate the crack, hate yourself for not getting the max out of it.

I will never ever regret the time I spent online in EQ.

People who can manage the game and their personal lives to the extent that they are happy are better than me. I had lots of fun, but the toll it took on my level of fitness, my level of attention to finances (that I was accustom to before EQ), and attention to family and life-long friends was greatly unbalanced.

I have an addictive-type personality. What ever I do usually I go 100% to the extreme. For me EQ was diverting lots time away from other things I consider more important.

If you can balance your life and EQ to a level you are happy with then there is no cheaper way to have fun. Looking back now it does kinda seem like a waste of time, but there was no way in hell anyone could have convinced me of that then.

EQ did have some great people though.

I do not regret playing Everquest...and think it was a great game, but, I can't say I don't regret a good deal of time I spent playing it. I made friends, and lots of fun playing, but, as Bise said "For me EQ was diverting lots time away from other things I consider more important"...namely my family.

I haven't decided for sure yet if I'll ever play another MMORG. I like what I've heard from friends playing WoW about how it better caters to casual players, so I may try it. I need to stick to games that can play for a couple hours and then put away for a few days without feeling like I'm falling behind if I do. Games that don't require one to play for hours on end....to old to power game anymore ;)

If it took 4 years of your life and flushed them down the toilet then you probably cannot manage your time properly or have some deep seated social issues, and it's NO ONE'S FAULT BUT YOURS, not the other players, and not "the game".

One also can't make such a point like that without perhaps shedding light on the fact that it very well maybe the majority of the avid posters here can also count themselves among the ranks of EQ retirees. This is NOT just an Everquest board. Sanchek, that quote I posted could have been stated by anyone, so don't feel like I am calling you out, because I am not. This isn't exactly a fresh topic :p , so its more of a case where the names may change but all the content stays the same. Anyway, this is more of a general community board now, in which our EQ experiences brought people together who seem to like to share some "debate, discussion and generally saying hello to each other" time, frequently on issues other than EQ. The Real Life Topics tend to be the area with the most traffic now.

So by all rights, this board is neutral ground. Did Jilo ask for a bit of punishment? Yup. its NAG and he chose to flame people that still play. Personally, with EQ being so addictive, anyone that quits should be complimented. There is a big world out there with lots to offer if you wish to apply yourself to go seek it out. Some times that means you have to "unplug".

Do I feel like a loser now for still coming here? No. Its still my free time when I only have a few minutes to drink a cup of coffee or whatever before its time to head out the door. Compared to what my usual day entails (military), this board sometimes ends up being the only dynamic intelligent human interaction I get all day.

Ya know, I dont regret playing the game, I do regret some of the choices I made to play when I should have been doing other things. Everquest, is a game, and should come after all RL obligations are met, I will be the first to admit, I put playing EQ first for a while, but the one thing I regret the most, is quiting and not staying in contact with the friends I made while playing. Although, I suspect many of them have quit, and I am long forgotten :) .I dont regret quiting though. This game saved me a whole lotta money over the 4 or so years I played, $12 a month for hours of fun with like minded peoples, versus a fortune going out and seeing movies, clubbing and other things.

After 5 years of playing-and infrequently posting on these boards-I have enjoyed myself enormously and have not a single regret. EQ has allowed me to do things that I would never have had the chance to do IRL. It has kept me sane at times when I really was on the verge of losing it. The people I have met have on the whole been wonderful and I have developed RL friendships and e-mail correspondence all over the world. If I had it to do all over again, I would not change a thing.

However, I can easily understand how someone who is young and in good health might find the time sink all encompassing and too much of a distraction from the fullness of life. I would be extremely upset if my teenagers did nothing but raid and level and quest. Moderation is the key-if you can't keep it all in perspective, then EQ may not be the way you should spend your time.

Having said this, I do not believe EQ gaming is a vice. It is not like drugs or drink or gambling. Further, I think the type of technology ssen in this game represents the wave of the future for all on-line activities. Think of the many commerical and business applications that may well, in time, evolve from this sort of enviornment. I have felt from the start that I was on the cutting edge-and that is a rare feeling for this old person to have about anything.

Finally, for me at least, this is a once in a lifetime thing. I do not have the heart to start all over again at level 1. So, I will enjoy it while it lasts and look back on it all fondly when it is no more.
