View Full Version : I remember when...

Fildien's anniversary thread gave me an idea. We did this about 4 years ago when EQ was dying, and I think it spawned a pretty good thread.
So in celebration of 10 years of EQ, though I'm sure it was nine or eight for many of us (I started end of 2000, few months before I joined the forum), I'd like to ask:
What is your earliest memory of EverQuest?
I remember when...
I was standing outside of North Qeynos gate, as a lvl4 eurdite, when a lvl 50 human paladin, with a flaming sword (can't remember its name) and full rubicite was standing at the entrance. That made a deep impression on me, as did his giving me 10pp and a ton of bread and water. Years later I collected the exact same gear and stuck it on an alt, cost me a fortune, and I never played the alt, but it felt like I had finally "achieved".
First BB train!
Running from spiders/lions in West Karana, me and my mate hiding in a tavern and realising for the first time that walls mean diddly-squat! And then spending the entire evening searching for the corpse - he being a human, me a erudite, equating to being utterly blind!
Doing the Qeynos, HH, Kitch Forest, Freeport run at lvl10 when I first got invis.
Ahhh.. good times.

Trying to get from Greater Faydark to Steamfont at level 3, to meet up with our friend, who had made a gnome character, and making the mistake of thinking the *road* through Lesser Faydark must be the way to get there. I'm sure you guys all know where this leads... :)
All I remember was seeing a tiny red glow in the road, an explosion, and 'You have been slain by Brownie Scout!' I died several times trying to recover my corpse to the same little jerk (that one that crosses the road about halfway back through the zone) and eventually had to get a level 51 paladin who was passing through the area to take it out for me...
Actually, I take that back... my *earliest* two memories of EQ were of drowning in the little pond underneath the enchanter/mage/wizard trainers in Felwithe right after I made Nydia because I hadn't figured out that you could port out, or how to swim; and standing in front of the jewelcrafting trainer a few minutes later and being asked why on earth I'd chosen an Enchanter, because they 'sucked'. Once I'd found out the class had no armor, no offense to speak of, and no healing, I knew it was the one for me :).
Regards,
Nydia
The invisible death run down to Neriak 3rd gate to get the Enchant Silver spell (I think it was) at level 8 was one of the highlights of my early career as well...

'Once I'd found out the class had no armor, no offense to speak of, and no healing, I knew it was the class for me'
- ROFL!!
'That stupid tree with the fake floor in Blackburrow. Arg.'
- That, at one time or another, has gotten everyone. I succumbed to it for the first time at about lvl8. Back then you had to type /corpse for someone to loot your stuff and return it to you. The guy who did so LD'd and never returned. Thankfully the GM was on it, but christ, what a crap system that was?

I remeber the "hook" moment. dec. 99 my first toon Tiendra DE SK was about lvl 6 when i found the zone in to Lavastorm. after wandering in to the zone proper and going EKKK i backed up way high on the zone wall and stood there scared shitless and in utter awe.
when they revamped that zone i died alittle and it was the beginning of the end for me.
And yea, that tree got everyone. not even gonna mention befallen.

I remember when as a young wizzy and Leah a young enchanter being in a group in one of the moon zones. Someone cast wolf form on us near a camp of mobs that previously wasn't aggro to us...well once the wolf form hit they all aggroed. I was so noobish I didn't know what to do so all I did was run in circles around the bodies of my dead group mates typing ferverantly..."what do I do what do I do? OMG!"
I think I must have had every mob on me within visibility range and the train was absolutely massive. I ran for several minutes until we were all laughing so much I finally died.
It's one of those things Leah has never let me live down and in any game where I find myself running thru mobs she starts chuckling to herself. I'm sure I'm telling it near as well as she could. It's one of my favorite memories though.
Of course there is the time that someone named Gandaar bound himself inside the loop of Finny (can't remember full dragon name) and he died over and over and over again deleveling a few times in the process. He got stuck in the binding death loop until a GM came and straightened it all out. I think I still have a screen shot of all his bodies :D

I got the game on release day. I made a druid and promptly fell through the tree trap in blackburrow. NO one was high enough to help so I had to delete the toon and start over. Then about a week later a very nice someone game me 5Pp to get a start with in eq life.

Playing a ranger to lvl 5ish or so. Maybe it was 6-7. It was a half elf and started in Qeynos. Than I deleted the ranger because it sucked because waiting forever to have a rat or bat spawn, only to have it get ganked or have it kill me just was pain stupid. Quit EQ for 2 or so months, and then made a DE warrior and started my career of killing skeletons in Nek forest when I was not getting killed by "A young Kodiak". Selling bone chips to necros kept me engaged and with a few pennys to rub together to buy bandages. Eventually I graduated to the giant skeletons in Rathe Mtns and the rest is history.....

Earliest EQ memory....
That would be standing at the entrance to Misty Thicket, looking out over all those rats wondering how fast I was gonna die as a level 1 Rogue. It was pretty fast! >.<
One that Fild will remember was me drowning in PC, because I didn't know that to swim, all you had to do was look up to get to the surface....LOL
Best memory was probably the first time we beat PoT. Taken that dragon down was a lot of fun. Game hasn't been the same to me, since.

I started a Ranger in 2001. Stayed in BB and Q.Hills for what seemed like months. I remember thinking it was ok to enter a building and sit down, not worrying about mobs walking through walls and killing me..especially the werewolfs in Karana's. Moving from BB to Highpass Hold was a monumental move and I think it took me all day to run across all zones, rebind, and drag what few friends I had met with me up to that point. Orc highway!!!
I still play, and I really like it.

I still have a screenshot of that night Fil! I think Gan finally pulled the plug on his internet connection to go LD to stop the loop. At the end of it Shannah and other clerics did over 100 rezzes to get Gan and another their XP back.
Gan didn't live that one down for a while!

I remember making my human ranger in July of 99. Somethings stand out even to this day from those initial days.
1) Being blind as hell in that damn tunnel coming out of Surefall. Cursing as I actually spent a hour once finding my way out at level 5.
2) Level 7 Fandros thinking he's becoming quite the ranger with his rusty sword and gear. Falling through that damn fake tree in Blackburrow. Losing the body and having to gear up again. I thought OMG I lost my gear, I'll never recover.
3) Making level 50 before Kunark came out and spending hours running back and forth from Sol B to Lower Guk for groups. Groups in lower guk would often call out their camps as "second torch down the tunnel". At one time I remember there were over 150 people in Lower Guk.
4) I remember my first Trakanon kill when the guild I was in , NightMare Clan, teamed up with Eternal Wrath to take it out. Drizzen shouts "Wave 3 go NOW".
5) Going rogue and bucking the KGC (karana guild council) target rotation. Which resulted in being blackballed by the KGC and suffering under the trains of other guilds like Triskelle.
6) Leaving Karana for Ayonae Ro and eventually joining EW once NC disbanded. Waking the Sleeper and being slammed in tells by everyone i knew that were from other guilds.
Sooo many fun memories!!

I've told the story before, so I'll sum it up:
Started at the same time as a friend. We both created humans; he a pally that started in FP, me a druid that started in Surefall. Leveled to 5, then decided I would make the trek... across Antonica. Ended up in SK (made a wrong turn somewhere), got agroed by a 20something lion. As I'm running, being beat to death I realized how screwed I was.
A couple minutes after showing up naked in Surefall wondering what the hell I was going to do, I got a tell from a 30ish cleric asking me what the hell I was doing in SK. I explained my situation and he rezzed me. He then spent two hours running me without SoW to Freeport and binding me there. Along the way he killed Wil-O-Wisps to get me a greater lightstone, since I was a blind ass human.
I have no idea who the guy was... can't even remember his name, but I was always thankful.
Other than that, I just remember how much it felt like I was in a different world. I remember sitting in church with my friend and and passing notes back and forth about the Fine Steel Scimitar I just got, etc, wishing I was on the game.
I've played MANY MMO's since. They've been fun, and some have been addicting, but nothing has yet re-created that first EQ experience for me.

While my earliest reflect some of what has already been offered, one of my favorite "acts" ala Gandaar was when Blearchie was quitting the game, and he bound himself in the lake in South Karana, creating a death loop as he continuously drowned and repopped and drowned and repopped, and his toon deleveled. I think he crashed the zone, or at the least the resulting lag was extreme.
One of the most creative "exits" I ever heard of in the game.

It wasn't South Qeynos; it was Lake Rathetear, near the exit where the goblins were (I can't, right now, remember if that was the rathe mountain or karana side) :). You would zone in and hit the wall of lag, helpless to do anything but get beat on by level 20 goblins if you were unlucky enough to be low enough. He sent me a tell right when he started (CoFE was camping that dragon for the Cleric epic at the time) and I went to see him on my troll shaman alt, and nearly got stuck in a drowning loop trying to say goodbye to him... ;)
I think I still have screenshots of the body piles (three of them total); he had to move a few times because the lag got so bad that he was crashing before he drowned ;)...

HAHA, i witnessed that watching on my friends PC. i remember a female barbarian shaman standing by the bridge (the tactician comes to mind?) calling out the orders.
ahhh the days of Mooshie(sp) and the mossy twigs. sorta gave me the incentive to stop farting around so much and level a toon so i could raid too.
I'll never forget LF's first Plane of Fear attempt. we fubared the break in really really badly. after hours of fruitless attempts to recover our bodies in a naked state. (bank gear was out the window on try 2) someone conned EW into coming to our rescue.

This will probably come back to bite me in the ass, but I suspect that Malse, being one of the more committed not-specifically-sexist misogynists I know (and for that matter misanthropes, but he particularly relishes grinding women into the dirt ;) ) had it in for Dashmoo largely because she was a reasonably successful, non-deferential, female guild leader, and an older female mommy guild leader, in addition to her being an insufferable narcissist and in some ways his direct competition. Beyond that I can't speculate, but I suspect that alone was enough to make her a target in his eyes ;)....

My only memory of Dashmoo is her trying to steal the ragefire camp we'd been holding for 3 days after saying she wouldn't.
I don't have any solid memories of first playing, my first memory of an actual event is the mino hero rampaging across the entire zone of steamfont until he was finally killed by the guards in front of Ak'Anon. My first memory of playing the game is simply a sense of wonderment wandering around qyenos as a half elf paladin. And then the same in Ak'Anon. Even a year or two into the game I'd spend time just walking around Ak'Anon, that city's the reason I play as a gnome in any fantasy game I play.
I'm still pissed that my brother deleted all my screenshots 5 or 6 years ago.

I loved Qeynos, was the model city for me, and its environs. Qeynos Hills, BB and the Karanas were *the* perfect zones, IMO. I levelled many a character just in that vicinity.
It continued to hold a deep sense of nostalgia for me over the years, I remember just before I stopped playing (2004, I think) I levelled some alts there and it was utterly deserted. It seemed very melancholy from its zenith in 1999-2001. That was always the flaw with EQ, the opening up of new content simply shifted the demographic to a new area, while leaving vast swaths useless and empty. Combined with the rapid inflation of equipment and loot, and you had a game where 3/4 of its content was obsolete.
Still, good memories.

I was a relative latecomer to EQ, having been peer-pressured by several friends to give it a try around January 2001 or so (already on Ayonae Ro by that time). I think my earliest memory was venturing forth from Felwithe for the first time and getting ganked by a black wolf while I was trying to kill my first bat.
I think one of my fondest memories though was much later on when my guild decided to ease the tension with a naked barbarian race from Halas to Freeport. We all made PvP enabled barbarians, no gear or external help allowed, and had to race by foot the entire way to Freeport. Crossing Kithicor at night with my first level barbarian rogue was some of the most fun I can remember having. I didn't win, but I was second or third as I recall, only having died once along the way ( I had hung back a bit as the mass of screaming barbarians made for the Blackburrow zoneline thinking they would catch all the agro, but such was not to be).

somehow i'm equating that pic and Dashmoo.
Reason i choose to throw in with a guild like Lost Fires. in its early days was a no BS no Drama place.
I love this thread I really do. but im tempted to go download a copy of the Boss's "Glory days" to play in the back ground while posting.
That was the mighty Zilor. Really cool guy at least when I knew him in PW. Had a lot of fun with Lost Fires doing epic runs and Halls of Testing. RIP will always be my home though, even if I don't play anymore.

I remember when I used to get a Penthouse magazine and open it to...ooops, wrong message board

Zilor was freaking hilarious. Random as hell, but would have these moments of keen insight where I'd just be like "wait, what?"
I think my earliest EQ memory was when I started my barbarian warrior. It was extremely dark outside, and I literally could not see more than 5 to 10 feet in front of me. I ended up running back to the guards when one of those badass vengeful skeletons came after me.
I also remember planning out a route to get to Freeport (since thats where all the cool people were, according to a level 30 that I struck up a conversation with) using eqatlas (I miss Muse's maps, they were awesome). I realized I'd have to go through kithicor forest, which was an absolutely terrifying prospect to me.
I remember saving up the cash from HQ bear pelts (everyone wanted them, they were for backpacks I think?), and rather than making my suicidal run to Freeport, I managed to get a druid to port me and run me over there, and he was even kind enough to bind me there. I nearly got mauled by that dark elf in WC and was panicking, it was awful. Crushbone was exciting too, especially when the ambassador and the emperor came out to play because some ill-prepared group thought they were too hot to trot and ended up training the zone. Good times.
