It is true, President Bush sounded alarms about Barack Obama during the campaign season. On Tuesday, Mr. Bush went one step further: He declared Mr. Obama’s inauguration an actual emergency.
That's sort of funny.

Of course, people being so pop-culture-shallow that they judge our leaders that superficially is not particularly un-dippy.

Though it makes sense, NOVA and Mont Co and DC are shelling out millions in security and this is the only way the feds can reimburse it.
I predict a 3 hour commute for me to get to work Sun, Mon, and Tues.

Judging someone on the words they themselves spoke (or failed at doing so) on serious issues of state is not superficiality.

These are not "hey I was chatting over lunch and my friend confused heterozygous and heterogametic, what a doofus!"
The particular legal wrangling over the funding is comic, though.

Judge his oratory skills, sure. The fallacy is assuming oratory skills are linked to intelligence or political ability.
Malse

That's not a fallacy. There is a strong correlation with sentence construction and verbal ability with intelligence. We're not talking about making persuasive arguments, this is conveying basic ideas.

No way. You sometimes find smart people who are also competent public speaks (Steve Jobs comes to mind), but those people are the exception. Most people are terrible public speakers, smart or dumb.
Bush definitely may be a moron, but you can't call that based on his public speaking.

Yea.. maybe Bush isnt the person to be making this argument on, or looking to in order to dispel the stereotype

If I did that you wouldn't get to watch it on TV! Luckily I bill from the moment my key opens my car door to the moment I shut the car off in my driveway (and time and a half after 10 hours)
DC is going to be a disaster zone though. I'm credentialed so I can go take a poop in the Capitol if I have to. What will happen for the 2 plus million people? This city couldn't handle the million man march that was only 870,000 people strong. And that was without the 5 am last call for the bars, all the closed bridges, no hotel vacancies and so forth. Me and my employees will all be behind the police barricades and stuff, who the fuck knows what's gonna happen on the other side with all of the masses. Its gonna fuck this town up.

The one good thing that would come of Chris Mathews interviewing Wolf Blitzer is that he would be constantly interrupting and not allowing Wolf to reply, so only one of the two insufferable hacks would be heard.
Talked with my Mother earlier, and she was all pissed off that during today's events with the plane going into the Hudson, Wolf Blitzer is interviewing a witness and trying to make the guy give up a similarity to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, which the witness was smart enough to avoid. Nice to see even my Mother is getting tired of these so-called journalists trying to create the news.

I wish I was actually working for a big network. Actually I got super excited when the calls came in for the Inauguration I signed up with the first network to call me. Since our names had to be cleared by the Secret Service weeks ago, once I committed to one network I couldn't change. So, this weekend ... I'm working for one of the tabloid shows! :(
The second call to come was from a little company called Comedy Central for a The Daily Show / Colbert Report Special - which probably would have been awesome.
The third call to come was from Harpo, since Oprah is broadcasting live from the Kennedy Center this week, and she's gonna have access to everything cool
The most recent call was from some German network, don't think I'm missing anything there. But losing Daily Show / Oprah sucks.

You sometimes find smart people who are also competent public speakers (Steve Jobs comes to mind), but those people are the exception. Public speaking is a skill that comes with practice. Anyone who has run for public office absolutely positively MUST have that skill. Anyone running for office who lacks that skill gets nowhere - it is possible to get elected in a small town or county with no public speaking skills - but anything larger than a few thousand people and you must have those skills.
If you listen to tapes of his debates and public speaking when he was Governor of TX, he spoke far more clearly, concisely and coherently than he does now. He didn't use any of those stupidifications that some folks call "aw shucks-isms." While it is possible that the pretzel incident was a stroke, his declining speaking skills show that he has serious mental issues, like Alzheimers, or worse. Find the recordings of his debates with Ann Richards, then listen to his 2004 debate performance, or even what drivel he mutters today.
Long ago, I worked for GM as a field rep, and part of my job involved standing up in front of groups and talking. At the beginning, the folks who hired me thought I couldn't do it, and were looking to foist me off on some other department. One fundamental thing when speaking in front of crowds is to know your material. If you know your stuff inside and outside (or front and back, if you prefer), then you can even end up on stage with no notes and ad lib it. This is why political debates have so much prep time involved for the participants.

I'm driving back to DC tomorrow (16 hours, ugh).
I live about 15 minutes walking distance from the Capitol. I'm not sure how close I'm going to get though. I'd imagine it's not worth wading into the human sea, and while irrational, I can't get over the fact that it would be incredibly easy to inflict mass casualties with very little effort.
We'll see how it goes.

That reminds me of a time I was kiting in HoH, and I saw Zehn zone in naked( must have been his bind spot). So I dropped 4 mobs on a naked Zehn, and I watched him die repeatedly. Was hilarious.
HoH with the pathing bug was a fun time for me to two box my cleric and a friends enchanter :)
That was one of the most fun times I had in the game.... :)

Jesus Christ. So its a few minutes after midnight and traffic is just as bad as your average DC rush hour ... its taken me 45 min to travel 10 miles. And now, stopped at a red light the driver of the car in front of me put her car into park, jumped out, ran to the car in front of hers, grabbed a bottle of champagne, popped the cork, and just jumped back into her car.
A call to the police, reported her license plate, and they said they're really busy but they will "try to look into it". There is still 4 and a half hours until last call!
And the weekend just started ...

Gosh, with the inauguration, concerns of terrorism, assassination, possible rioting, control of crowds of millions of people and all of the other stuff going on I cant for the life of me wonder why the police would not respond to someone drinking champagne. Did you make sure to tell them you are posting messages on a message board while you drive?

Yup. Let the lady drink her booze. If traffic was that bad then if she hits someone its not going to do any damage at the whole 2 miles an hour.
This needs to go well. Too many people have their hopes hitched to Obama. If something happens, be it terrorists or ignorant rednecks......

DC city council is smarter than you, they gave out only a set number of licenses to sell merchandise through a lottery and are imposing very steep fines to anyone w/o a license. They wanted to make their share of the money too!
The spending is amazing though. Most resturants have a 2 hour wait, and I only had an hour lunch break. Luckily there was an Irish resturant near union station owned by an irishman, was able to talk them into making me a meal to go and they gave it to me for free with my red.

LOL...I do get a kick out of the I have 50 cases of ammo and I will be in my house...err fortress ready to repel the invading terrorists.
I agree with L2.
Osg, if you do by chance get your wish and are attacked here are a few tips:
1) Don't stay in your house, after the first rounds you fire they will know right where you are. So it's best to get outside where maneuver is king!
2) Try to carry about 180 rounds or so as any more will get heavy real fast and become burdensome. Use semi-auto as much as possible and carefully aim your shots, squeeze the trigger don't pull it. Breathing is very very important, keep conscious of it and you will see your hits on target increase. You will be surprised with a little bit of trigger control how long 180 rounds will last.
3) Once you fire try and move as fast as possible, if you can, plan out where your next firing position will be but also note you might have to improvise as your next position could also be under fire. Always be ready to move!
4) Try not to let your targets get to close, close hits mean blood spatter and oddly enough the smell of blood can often times cancel out the smell of cordite.

Tsk, tsk....Colorado does not allow for that kind of ambience in the yard-space.
