So this one has me stumped. First, I've downloaded and ran AVG as well as Trend Micro's Housecall and Norton antivirus as well as Hijack This, Bazooka, and Ad Aware. I'm fairly certain my computer has no viruses or spyware or malware of any kind.

But ultimately any time I load a website, 9/10 times it takes forever to load. It gets up to normal speed sometimes, but then it'll slow back down again. Just loading this page took forever.

This only happens on this computer, which is hard wired to my Linksus Wireless Router. My laptop, my girlfriend's laptop, and my hard wired MAC all browse the internet fine.

I can log into a game like Everquest2 or Warcraft3 and have no lag in game. Downloads, when they finally start, run at great speeds. AIM sends messages instantaneously, and mIRC runs fine.

I've replaced the network card and it didn't fix it. I've updated all drivers. This problem started ~1 week ago, and I can't think of anything I've done differently between now and then which would cause this.

Thoughts?

OMG its bad.....
There is an error between the seat and the key board!!!!

j/k
What OS are you running on it? Vista?? if so download the latest Service Pack for it. I noticed a similiar problem on one of my environments running Vista, ran the SP and all was good again.

What browser? Sounds like a hosed browser to me. If you're using IE, you could try another browser (Firefox, Opera... etc). I was using IE until it started crashing left and right (damned 64 bit vista) and I'm too lazy to troubleshoot why (heh... when you work in IT, doing "work" at home isn't very appealing... kinda like how gardeners have the worst yards at home). I use FireFox. My friend kinda turned me on to Opera the other day though. When opera closes for any reason (you close it, it crashes or your system crashes) when you re-open it, everything you had open will re-open. I thought that was great.. and its download-center page looked cool too. May give it a try sometime.

Something else you might try is booting to Safe Mode with Networking (hold F8 while booting) and try browsing there. There could be a number of things going on, but one thing could be that the computer is looking for something to be running which either wasn't installed, is corrupt or has been removed. When you boot to safe mode, no non-essential services are started. If you're able to browse fine, you could try troubleshooting the problem by going into Services and disabling anything you know you don't need or that you don't recognize.

If you're not great with troubleshooting, you may be better off doing an OS re-install to solve the problem. You could try a repair install first (boot to the OS CD, say you want to install windows -NOT the repair windows option that it gives you at the first screen... that takes you to a command prompt windows repair - and let it find the install of windows, then tell it to try to repair the windows it found) which should overwrite all your OS files. Or you could do a full install to a different folder. Of course, you're probably going to want to back up anything important first either way.

It works that way on Firefox, Netscape, and IE.
I'll check safe mode now.

It works fine in safe mode, thats the good news.

Booted out of safe mode, got The Services and Controller App has to be terminated. Then got a System Shutdown box for c:\windows\system32\services.exe status code -1073741819 and it forced a restart :(

Back in safe mode, now googled that error and found its related to the Sasser Worm, running Symantec's Sasser Worm Removal device ... cross those fingers :)

Sasser Worm not found on the computer with Symantec's removal device :(

Bleh... probably something that was cleaned already but caused damage in the process. Still probably reinstalling would be the safest bet.

Yeah.
So, the Win XP CDs I used to install on this computer ~2 years ago are in Philadelphia. I'm in DC. I figure Microsoft paid me $350 last week to do a shoot for them so I may as well get some of that back to them.

But if I'm gonna pay, I may as well get the newest thing, right? Vista had a lot of problems at release but it sounds like most of them were cleared up already. Any thoughts on which OS to buy?

i have Vista and run DX10 i have ZERO problems, no hang ups, only issues i have are when i switch from 2 to 4 monitors on the fly, but i think thats more of a hardware issue than Vista.

Get Home Premium. the upgrade version isnt too pricey and the bells and whistles are nice.

I never really had much problems with IE which from the way people talk i am the 1 guy in america without a broken IE. I do use Safari only because i like the look of it, and the organization of some of the drop down menus on the sites i go to is a little smoother.

On a side note, i love when peoples solution to browser issues is to just use a different one.

Ok kel tme for real advice instead of blame china and buy a mac. I use vista ult. for all my machines at home. I have updated the service packs and the only issue I have is that some of my computer apps do not support vista. Work everything is xp pro unfortunatly software for schools does not upgrade as fast as microsoft... Hell i have programs that we got this year from the state that are "New" and the requirements are for windows 95 !!!!

I have a $10000 quad core G5 sitting right next to it. Its a piece of crap. At least when a PC program crashes you get a box saying sorry ... when my Final Cut crashes it just closes and pretends it was never open and the auto save stops working. I have to have a MAC for work, but for gaming I prefer the PC.

Sent my intern to go get me Vista Home Premium, gonna reformat in a few hours. If you don't see me post here again its because it didn't work and I flipped out.

First of all I wish you luck on your new OS installation (sometimes luck is the only difference between computer nirvana and monitor-throwing disaster!)

Vista is pretty cool. I use Ultimate x64 and the only issues I occasionally have are more or less because of lazy software/driver developers/companies that haven't woken up and provide 64-bit drivers.

Software compatibility issues have been a non-issue for me as they all have had work arounds thus far (well, thanks to Google that is).

Examples:

Adobe Encore 1.5 (and certain Adobe CS1 & CS2 programs) - trying to run installation brings up error that says it's not compatible with current OS (Vista). This is stupid b/c Premiere of the same version installs fine. Solution was to run the .exe file on the program CD in XP SP2 compatibility mode. Officially Encore CS3 is the only program that "officially" supports Vista, but that's wrong and they're just being difficult.

Star Trek Voyager Elite Force (FPS - year 2000, awesome game) - Attempting to install brought up a similar error to the above situation but with different more creative complaint. Solution was same as above.

Certain driver issues I've had have all had work-arounds, and most of my problems are from having a 64-bit OS anyway, not necessarily just because it's Vista.

Moral of the story, for software compatibility issues, use compatibility mode!

Ok, Vista on and everything is working perfectly.
One question. Before when reformatting I would copy to a portable hard drive the "c:\windows\Application Data\Identities\" folder to copy over all of my Outlook info (all the business e-mails from the past 3 years or so)
Vista doesn't have that folder, any ideas?
