- If we don't do something serious about this, we're going to look as gutless as we did when they seized our sailors.

The Iranian government had a clear chance to get out of this relatively unscathed - and then they do something stupid like this.

after reading the article it seems they're local Iranians that work at the embassy?

Yes, they are.

Time to forcibly remove some leadership? They cant just violate diplomatic immunity after allowing the UK to have an embassy there. Then again its not like anyone should be surprised. Dictators don't exactly need evidence.

If it was just locals, they didn't have any sort of immunity did they?

Sounds like staff, not diplomats with immunity, assuming other countries recognize diplomats the same way we do.
A recent look at world politics should show us how well forcibly removing a head of state works.

Strap on a pair of boots and say goodbye to your family. I'm right fucking behind you......Seriously, I'm getting really burnt out saying goodbye to friends, family and loved one to go back to the Middle East only to get involved with other countries shit. /vent off
I feel better, carry on.

I already did 5 years in the military but thanks anyway Trikki :) and I clearly meant the brits not the US. But good game.
If the Brits are not interested in protecting their staff then I would not expect to get much local help. Im sure their being arrested had nothing to do with the fact they worked at the embassy /rollseyes

I didn't know that Chanur. What branch and where have you deployed that you can relate so well? ;)

Yes they're locals, without diplomatic immunity.
But really, that matters very little. I'm impressed by the EU's strong statement yesterday during the meeting of foreign ministers in Greece, but we need more. Send a British carrier to the straits, IMO.

Unless you are friends with lots of british nationals your point is moot Trikki. Since we are talking about an entirely different army. ;)

- Five released, but the other nine are supposedly under interrogation. Nice and friendly, I'm sure. In doing this, they are being massively counter-productive in inflaming the issue right when tensions are beginning to die down. Unless they've gone for the 'a common enemy unites the divided' approach.

Ahmanutjob is doing his usual "everything is THEIR fault", placing the British in the bullseye this time rather than the Americans, although he is keeping the hostile dialog going at both. And based on the protesters who attended the rally the other day, I am not sure tensions are really dying down as much as simply being kept in check.

He walks a fine line, he's trying to re-direct anger at the west by making it look like we were meddling. If he pushes to far he'll be found out and the people (the ones still on the fence or for him) will turn against him and tip the balance back away from him.

Iran is doing a great job treating the symptoms....
The problem is they are doing nothing but making the root cause worse. 60% of their population is under 30. This is far from over.
MA try all he wants to redirect.. but the facts are the facts.
