- Someone should really let him know that, beyond his own borders, he really is quite insignificant.

It's amazing what 4 million barrels of oil a day can do for one's ego.

And another leader appears on the world stage with delusions of grandeur.
It will be interesting to see over the next few years where the money goes from the widening business dealings with China; does Chaves do a Saddam and start building palaces, or does the country as a whole prosper?

My hunch is that if he goes too far overboard with his chest-thumping and rhetoric that he may slip in the bathtub.

On a sidenote, Halo, thanks for the link. There was another article regarding the damage caused by the oil spill resulting from an Israeli attack on a power station that has not gotten much attention here. That disaster is deserving of an entire thread in itself.:(

I wonder when the US will "invade" and take over his oil....
To "spread Democracy", of course...
Any ties to Al Qaeda?

I seen that on world news tonight...they said the spill is on par with the Valdez(sp?) oil spill. Its a huge mess and they haven't even begun to think about cleaning it up.

And yea Halo, I can't stand that retard Chavez...

4 Million Barrels of oil a day @ 75 bucks a shot....

If oil was 30-50 bucks a barrel Chavez would have been ousted long ago. Petropolitics FTL

He's a real power in the Southern/western hemisphere.

Of course being a power in Central/South America is a dangerous claim to fame. Outside of Fidel it has traditionally led to an early death.

Doing research for that 4 billion barrels a day comment uncovered quite a bit I had no idea prior. Speaking of which, I misquoted their actual output that is actually closer to 3.3 billion, but what's 700 million barrels among friends? :D

Apparently Venizuela was one of the origonal founding members of OPEC and is also has the 5th largest verified oil reserve in the world. They are also the 5th largest oil exporter in the world.

One third of their GNP is generated from oil exports. Oil also accounts for 80% of their total export earnings, and more than half of government revenues.

Who said they had ties to Al Qaeda?

- We'll just get Thatcher back to bully the Irish in to giving us their grain. She's only 82.

I've spent the past week interviewing all sorts of folks from professional "Arabists" whos names I'd hardly be able to remember to Newt Gingrich to Richard Armitage - who all are convinced that the Isreal / Hezbollah spinoff of the "Middle East Crisis" is gonna lead to World War 3 ... start with the Iraq destabilzation and now Iran is the big wig in the middle east, and then we obviously have Syria and Iran muscling in supporting Hezbollah, and when you get stupid countries such as these throwing their hat into the ring (needlessly) its not hard to picture it all bubbling over. All we need is China to get upset about protecting their own oil interests ...

It'll actually be a good show, its being produced by CBS News for the History Channel, should air sometime this week or next week.

WW3? Are all you Yanks such drama queens?

Whats even funnier, is my co-worker just got home from London talking to 2 members of British Intelligence about their fears of how this could escalate into WW3 as well. Though one of them termed it WW4, believing the Cold War was WW3.

Its sensationalized, because its television, but its not that far from the realm of posibility.

...and here I thought Armageddon was going to involve an asteroid and Bruce Willis. I could certainly use a little Liv Tyler right about now.
