I'm only about two years late in figuring this out.

The game that was seminal for MMPORPGs is online and playable!

It has no graphics, well, unless you use the Spinel interface and turn them on, but consists of a flat world that you navigate through using commands like "N NE W" via a telnet screen. It is multi-user, although, heh, not so many folks play.

To get an interface for the game, visit:

http://www.dragonsspine.com/dspine/index.php (http://www.dragonsspine.com/dspine/index.php)

To get the game manual (which you'll need to figure out how to play) visit:

http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/ (http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/)

and download the guide:

http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/iok/guides/iok_bg_kompanion.htm (http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/iok/guides/iok_bg_kompanion.htm)

and the game's map:

http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/iok/renfield_iok_files/maps/kesmai_map.txt (http://archive.legendsofkesmai.com/iok/renfield_iok_files/maps/kesmai_map.txt)

A good diversion if your other game is down and... it's free!

In this game designers learned:
- not to let players name themselves after mobiles ("mobs")
- to watch out for duping bugs
- all about rezzing
- how to deal with disgruntled advanced players
- guilds

and so on.

Pretty interesting stuff.

PS: it is Telnet-based kinda, really super old school 80s-stuff - so firewalls often don't like much.
PPS: hopefully this "general" area is okay spot for this post.
