Well, Jane Fonda finally met one of the "boys" she so blatantly disrespected during the Viet Nam war. She was doing a book signing in Kansas City, and this unhappy vet who had waited in line for about 90 minutes promptly gave her a facefull of tobacco juice. It seems he had taken up chewing tobacco specifically for this event. He said he was simply returning the favor, since she had spit in the face of American soldiers.

As a disabled Viet Nam vet, I was very pissed at her for climbing up on that Anti-aircraft gun for photos; she has apologized profusely for that, and I accept it. As for protesting the war, I believe that was her right. After all, we were fighting the war to give those people the same freedoms we enjoy in the US, one of which is the freedom to voice your protest.

What do you think?

I agree that she had a right to voice her opinion regarding the war. After all, that's what our armed forces were over there for... as you mentioned... to give another country the right right to have freedom of choice.

I have no respect for her as a result of what she did to our servicemen. Her actions were deplorable. I have mentioned this before in another thread, it doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with the war, treat the warriors with respect, they are doing what you pay them to do.

I do not condone what was done at the booksigning, but I understand the frustration and desire to seek a little revenge. She made some decisions many years ago and she has to live with them. The public has a long memory when it comes to things like that. In light of what has come out of the war in Iraq, I believe that there are those who will be paying for their words... if not today, then certainly sometime in the future.

Voicing your opinion is one thing but didn't she actually meet with soldiers who were being held in a concentration camp or something? And didn't she say she say nothing wrong with them?!?!?

She deserved every ounce of juicy wet spit she got in her eyes and then some.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details of the prison camp that she supposedly visited during Vietnam. Something about a soldier attempting to pass her a note for delivery back to the States? She turned it over to the guards, or something...

At any rate, there was something said about your freedom of expression ending at the tip of someone elses nose. I'd say he crossed that line, and will likely pay.

Protesting the war is one thing -- I have no problem with that. Free speech is a good and necessary thing. The only way I could in any way respect the decisions she made during her trip to Vietnam were if she stayed there, having decided their way of life was superior to ours. I'd disagree, of course, but it'd be her choice to make. Jane apologized, and that's good, but -- rightly or wrongly -- she'll just have to get used to the idea of a lot of people despising her for her actions. You reap what you sow.

I wonder how many wingers who've recently decried salad dressing and pie "attacks" on Pat Buchanan and Ann Coulter will vocally deplore that veteran's actions. I suspect...zero.

Pat getting the pie in the eye was classic, but not as good as when Bill Gates got his. Though spit is much more symbolic. I'm sure he will pay for his actions, but I applaud him for having the gusto and patience to do it.

This makes me wonder.....who else should be on a pie/spit in the eye list?

Everyone in the United States should be on the pie list.

Hrm... can't find the news article now, but CNN had her name a few days back with some anti-Iraq activities. Didn't sound like she'd gone too far like she did in Vietnam, but you'd think she'd take the hint.

There's nothing wrong with her exercising her freedom of speech. But when you pull something like she did you better be prepared for a lot of angry vets to exercise their rights as well.

The patience that must have required is simply classic. I guess that goes to show what goes around will come around, when you least expect it.

She played the part of a traitor during our time at War. She should have been shot at the time, or locked away for the rest of her life. The government should have at least destroyed her career completely.

I wouldn't have a problem with that.

I think her action in Nam pretty much destroyed her career with out goverment intervention. but sadly we couldnt to anything about Ted Turners millions from keeping her in the public eye.

Well, I guess he should apologize for his anti-Jane actions and she should just accept his apology, right?
