There has been much ado the last several years regarding the Islamic fanatics' jihad against the western non-believers. Terrorist attacks, and the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq are just the tip of the iceberg of what we could be facing. We have committed billions of dollars and thousands of lives to stop the advance against us and our way of life.

But, what about the subtle, less threatening form of advance that is the legal immigration of people from Muslim countries into the United States; last year, according to Homeland Security and Census figures, more people from Muslim countries became legal residents than in any year in the previous two decades, nearly 96,000 total. In 2005, 40,000 people from Muslim countries were admitted into the U.S.

Residents of New Jersey, one a citizen by birth and another who has lived here for the past forty years, have been detained at U.S. airports because she was wearing a head covering and his name is Mohammed. We have taken measures against our own citizens based on our fears of another attack on our country. What in-depth investigation or background checks have been done on those entering our country to become citizens these last several years?

Are we becoming the proto-typical victims of the "if you can't beat them, join them" approach?

See, I thought you were supposed to trust in the government; it has all the answers to keep you safe....
So are you advocating refusal of citizenship based on religious doctrine?
If not, how can you screen the extremist from the moderate?

Hmm, typed a long response, realized it was mostly just to echo Bylimet over Sixee, and was a waste of time. But I thought I should throw this in:

If you think your life is rough, or feel for the woman in Bylimet's story, just think of my friend Saddam Hussien, born in Jersey, resident of Phoenix. Poor cat gets about a weekly phone call from one agency or another checking up on him. "You've got the wrong man!" he screams.
