John McCain did great tonight in the debate. But every time John mentioned “Joe the Plumber,” some of us in the campaign banged our heads against the wall. If Steve Schmidt had any hair left, I hear he would have been pulling it out tonight. He reportedly screamed at John’s debate prep team tonight (out of earshot of reporters, of course). “You idiots - he’s related to Charles Keating… of the Keating Five scandal!” They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Does any of this make Joe the Plumber a bad guy? Of course not. In fact, after that ill-fated night at the Watergate, he may finally be giving plumbers a good name. But at a debate where John goes full bore on Obama for guilt-by-association with William Ayers (and dodges a bullet by Obama not mentioning Keating Five), the press is going to bring it back front and center by midday tomorrow once they delve deeper into the most popular plumber in America.

This might remind you of the Paris Hilton scandal - where one side of the McCain campaign attacked her in an ad, not realizing that her family were huge donors. I was the first to warn the campaign of the perils of miscommunication within the campaign, and that story flared for a week.

UPDATE: Sure enough, a few hours after posting this, the left wing haters at DailyKos posted (or shall I say copied?) their own revelations about Joe’s connections to Keating. Like I said to the campaign: Oops.

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, a.k.a. "Joe the Plumber," is the topic of the day on the campaign trail, in part because he held an impromptu press conference Thursday morning in front of his house to discuss tax policy, his disdain for Social Security, and his critiques of Barack Obama.

Already, however, there is some dispute as to whether or not Wurzelbacher was being accurate with his critique of Obama. His business, as ABC reports, would almost certainly get a tax cut under Obama's plan, given that he does not expect to make anywhere close to $250,000 in profits.

Moreover, for someone worried about his taxes, Wurzelbacher doesn't -- it appears - always pay them. A filing with the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas shows that he has had state tax liens filed against him, meaning he was either delinquent or didn't fully cover taxes that he owed.

A representative at the court explained that Wurzelbacher had not paid $1,182.98 of personal income tax. The state filed a lien on January 26, 2007, and the payment remains outstanding. But the court rep also cautioned that this all may have occurred without Wurzelbacher's knowledge.

Who cares if taxes are raised for him, if he doesn't pay them anyway!

I keep finding this stuff, while searching for the actual article I saw this morning about him. Man, they're tearing this guy apart.

**Update** Joe the Plumber looks to be one of the thousands of American voters whose voter registration data fails to match his real life data. There is a Samuel Joe WORZELBACHER on the Secretary of State's rolls for Holland, Ohio. As fate has it, the most recently famous of Ohio's Republican voters is now a poster boy for why GOP efforts to purge voter rolls are as unreliable as voter protection advocates have argued they are, less a legitimate measure to prevent voter fraud than a transparent attempt to keep likely Democrats from voting.

Disenfranchised by his own party?

Here's the one I was actually looking for.

One week ago, Joe Wurzelbacher was just another working man living in a modest ranch house near Toledo thinking about how to expand his plumbing business. But when he stopped Senator Barack Obama during a visit to his block this weekend to ask about his taxes, he set himself on a path to being the newest media celebrity — and, like other celebrities, found himself under scrutiny.

Turns out that “Joe the Plumber,” as he became nationally known when Senator John McCain made him a theme at Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate, may run a plumbing business but he is not a licensed plumber. His full name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher. And he owes a bit in back taxes.

The premise of his question to Mr. Obama about taxes may also be flawed, according to tax analysts.

An official at Local 50 of the plumber’s union, based in Toledo, said Mr. Wurzelbacher does not hold a license. He also has never served an apprenticeship and does not belong to the union. (The national plumber’s union, the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Service Mechanics, endorsed Mr. Obama, it should be noted.)

“He’s basically playing games with the world,” Thomas Joseph, the local’s business manager, said in a telephone interview Thursday morning.

Problem is...none of this matters...the damage has already been done. Perception is king, not facts. Most idiots swayed by this moron will never know he's a shill.

Not sure what would have swayed whom, but on NBC Nightly news tonight he was saying that at his present salary he would benefit more from Obama's tax plans.

Funny, in another interview he was lying about purchasing his boss's business and complaining how he'd then have to pay more taxes under Obama. What a clown.

Being trapped in a recovery ward on Wednesday I had nothing better to do than keep watching that sad excuse for a "debate," (and yeah, what was with McQuasimodo?) I had to wonder what sort of dumbass the McCain campaign was hoping they could make a new media fete out of ... well, now we know. Barely employed pathological liars, have we got a platform for you!

I am beginning to think McCain doesn't want to be prez now. Why take on all the problems that are now going to plague the next prez?

just my opinion :)

Because it's his last chance to sneak in there and bomb the "gooks" before he's too old!
