ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A family court judge in Rochester has ordered a drug-addicted woman to have no more children until she proves she can look after the seven she already has.

It's the second time Judge Marilyn O'Connor has made such a ruling.


The 31-year-old mother had already lost custody of her children, ranging in age from 8 months to 12 years, in child-neglect hearings dating back to 2000. Six are in foster care at state expense and one lives with an aunt.


Three of them tested positive for cocaine at birth.


In a similar ruling last March, Judge O'Connor ordered a drug-addicted, homeless mother of four to refrain from bearing children until she won back care of her children. The decision, the first of its kind in New York, is being appealed.

I found the poll on this site interesting. I agree with the judge here, if you can't take care of what you have stop having more.

Free birthing must be stopped!

There needs to be a medical procedure created to make male and female babies infertile at birth. Then, when they can prove they can handle being a parent the procedure can be reversed. I have of course ignored all the moral and political ramifications of such a procedure but shit like this makes me sick. Don't just order her to not have kids, rip her fuckin ovaries out.

the State, or any part of it, determining who can have children, how many, and when. It sets a bad precedent.

Personally, I think she should be jailed for life, or put into some sort of work program where she has no freedom and all her earnings are returned to the State. As far as I am concerned, if the State has to take care of your children, your life belongs to the State. Now THAT would be a precedent I could get behind.

Besides, how can you order some brainless, drug-addicted slut to stop reproducing?

You can order them to not have more children but how are they going to stop her from actually "making" them?

Sounds similar to the case in Wisconsin that a woman was a sex offender (she likes them underage boyz) and she was being forced to "ask" permission to have sex with who ever she decides to have sex with. Interesting but I tend to believe as well..a convicted drug abuser who bears childern while still under the influance ..needs some serious actions taken against her.

I hate to say it, but I think It's about time. Some people should not be allowed to breed because of the serious risks they put on the life of their children.

I'd also add to binuven's list by saying, if you have a felony conviction, you can't do many of those either(at least in the US), but any rapist, drug dealer, etc. is free to raise a child.

It has already been said but, some women and men are not fit to be parents, and they shouldnt be either, if they cant take care of their kids they should have that right taken from them, maybe not after one messup, depending on the seriousness of it, but if it happens repeaditly they should definitly be ordered or something not to keep it up... I mean if they can ban animal abusers from ever owning animals again (wich doesnt happen often enough) why not ban child abusers from haveing children?

I am aware of a law in China, either in the country as a whole or maybe certain provinces, restricting families to one child each; this has resulted in many dead female babies, as males are more highly prized for their ability to provide for the parents in their old age, and carry on the family name.

State sponsored euthanasia may be more appropriate for this woman than state sponsored birth control; of course, it would have the same effect;)

The idea of requiring a liscense to have children is quite nice. But once you think about it in practice, with fallible humans controlling it... it gets scary.
