BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq -- Maj. Kevin Sonnenberg stands next to his U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon after a mission in this 2005 file photo from the Ohio Air National Guard's 112th Fighter Squadron. Major Sonnenberg, 42, of McClure, Ohio, was killed in action June 15 when his F-16 crashed five miles northwest of Balad Air Base, Iraq. The veteran fighter pilot had just taken off on a combat mission to provide air support to coalition ground forces fighting anti-Iraq forces. He was deployed here to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. This happened where I'm at. Was just last week. He banked too hard prior to pulling up and wound up going down instead of up. Full payload and full load of gas. Wasn't much left except a big whole in the earth.
RIP
