The other day I was doing something (I forget what) and was told I needed the new version of Adobe reader, so I went ahead and downloaded. Then I had to run out for some errands, and when I returned the screen was at the start up prompting me for a password.

After doing the password start up stuff, and getting to desktop, I see I now have a McAfee icon on desktop. Now I was not sure how it got there, being nobody else accesses my computer, but being busy I figured I would address it later. Now today, it is asking if I want it to do a scan.

Could this somehow have been a rider with the Adobe update? I am not sure if I should 'uninstall', or if that might trigger something if this is indeed something malicious. Ohhhh, the trials and tribulations of being a computer illiterate user.

I can't remember seeing Adobe package anything like that with the reader. Did your computer come with McAfee something or another pre-installed?

If it's legit, you should find it in your add/remove programs control panel and can remove it there if you don't want it.

On a side note, Foxit's PDF reader is faster, lighter, smaller, etc than Adobe's (and free also): http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Thanks for the fast reply. No, it wasn't bundled when new, so I figure it had to be a ride along with something. Never had something just show up like this before.

Thanks, will be looking at an uninstall.
