I have a couple email accounts that I don't check regularly. Maybe once late at night and once in the afternoon sort of mailboxes. Ones I use for spam and Everquest...

In my mailbox today, I received three screenshots taken from the message board of one of the guilds involved in the Ssra temple dispute. The sender used a hotmail account, and sent them to me under the premise that they were a member of that guild, dissatisfied with some of the discussion.

for a 12 digit hotmail name probably about 30-60 minutes to return a positive. on a 12 digit filename probably about the same, if your dictionary is already built.

You'd have to do it dictionary based. 36 possible choices of say 15 characters would take literally forever. Using words and munges of words would be faster.

However, we have this huge bottleneck of the internet between the code and the oracle (the website). At 2 per second, over 1 hour that's only 7200 attempts -- and there is no way in hell you'll be able to find the correct one in 7200 attempts.

A more reasonable number is 1 million attempts before you get a positive -- which would take a good week at 2 per second. At 1 k per query/response, that consumes 1 gigabite of traffic from Palimax's server, and that's starting to reach real money. 1 billion is possibly even more reasonable, and now we are talking 15 years of queries.

Like I said, any attempt to use direct, or brute-force based, password cracking strategies on this will act and look like a DOS attack, or it will take literally forever.

Manual guesses and social engeneering, or working around the problem, should have a much higher chance of success, realistically.

I can't verify the rights of the contributer to repost this material. Once he takes it upon himself to link to (or display as images) the pictures, or all the parties involved agree that their private information can be shared (which will also be difficult, since I won't reveal who all has been quoted - or from where), then you can all get to see them.

It'd be a simpler matter were the contributer not anonymous.

Yes, Laeyakk, I suppose you could figure it out eventually, as trying www.base-nine.org/badname1 (http://www.base-nine.org/badname1) will return you a 404, and trying www.base-nine.org/images (http://www.base-nine.org/images) will return you a 403. A 4-8 alpha with a 1-4 numeric will probably get you the hotmail name in only 208,827,064,576,000 tries. Your odds go up dramically if his/her name was in the dictionary. :)

Now, that said, please don't. My ISP does some fairly heavy logging and if one of you clowns is attacking my website, I'll pursue it to the fullest.

Anonymous postings do not need to have credibility to be damaging to the target. Given much of the conflict between a number of guilds, I think people have come to believe the worst in any given situation whether it is true or not. The mere fact that this was posted has given RiP a black eye in the minds of many, simply because everyone is conditioned to believe the worst. It's sad when we are so ready to jump to believe innuendo and rumor.

I want to know my sources before I place any stock in them. I won't link the photos unless everyone involved in them says it's ok to do so.

I'll continue to allow the anonymous email sender to link to them if he wishes to use me as a free hosting service.

I've offered free hosting services for people on this board before, and I'll continue to do so -- but if you want to post them, post them yourself.

While it is true, VA doesn't have any business posting them, I'm sure I speak for the rest of the community in saying that VA wouldn't be held accountable solely based on a member hosting an image.

It's simple...if Pali had not made this public knowledge and had just responded via e-mail, he might have been accused of being the source (since he is hosting the pictures) if the sender had taken up the challenge to post. Also, it is a way of taunting the anonymous trolls who haunt this board.

You can take my word for it, the screenshots exist but could have possibly been faked. Pali does not want to take responsibility for potentially false accusations. Its as simple as that.

Obviously if the sender was going to step up to the plate and take responsibility, he/she would have done so by now. I suggest you all just file this away as an attempted hoax and move on to other threads.

That guy, whoever he is, can post them anytime he wants.

All he needs to know is the "password" that is his email address.

A rouge member, a disgruntled member, or a spy has taken screenshots of one of those guild's message boards with "evidence" that one of those guilds isn't exactly all smiles and sunshine.

The validity of that "evidence" is questionable. For all I know, they're fake. But all that has to happen is the person who emailed me has to come forward with his email name.
