This company continues to raise the bar on finding ways to abuse and marginalize the workforce....

The latest effort by the Greed Gang running this outfit has turned employment practices upside down; they are now telling employees that they need to be available for scheduling anywhere from 7am to 11 pm, and those that are not amenable to being at the beck and call of the Management have seen hours go from 32-40 hours per week to 8-16.

Employees are charging that Walmart is attempting to force out those at the high end of the wage scale in favor of more part-time workers who would not enjoy the same benefits and salaries. So, the $11.35 an hour employee is now facing the prospect of modifying child care and family concerns (or the hours of the second job that allows them to get by without welfare) in order to be available for any hours between 7am and 11 pm that the Management deems to assign them, on any given week.

What makes this all the more disgusting is that Wall Street is applauding the action as a means to increasing the price of the stock. I guess it is easy to be greedy as long as it is someone else that is bearing the burden of making your profits for you.

I am going to be actively encouraging everyone I know to stop giving any of their money to these greedy bastards.

This was reported in today's St Paul Pioneer Press, and if you have not seen it yet, I am sure it will be getting more wide spread attention very soon.

I heard an interesting little tidbit about them the other day. Our producer for the behind the scenes of Die Hard was telling us that its getting tougher and tougher to raise money to do bonus features for DVDs because Walmart just wants their products cheaper and cheaper and don't care about the extra stuff. That seemed logical enough, but then he told us that they sell somewhere around 70% of all the DVDs in this country - and whatever they wanted they ended up getting. Could that possibly be true?

All it would take is for a unified workforce to collectivly walk the hell out. It's companies like Walmart that generated the need for unions. This is my opinion and is not based on any facts about unionization efforts in the past. Take it or leave it.

I still don't shop at Walmart.

As a company Walmart does a lot of good things for the community - they give a ton of money back to various groups and organizations around them. I know of a church that was helping host Walmart's management meetings, and they received in return what was nearly a blank check to help them improve some of their outreach programs.

What Walmart has always had issues with is employee relations. For this reason, above others, I've always tried to stay away and advised others to do the same. To keep prices low they have cut just about everything, will undersell just about anyone, and their pay plus benefits is crummy. Don't even get me started on their practices involving illegal aliens.

I haven't heard anything about putting people on call ( link possibly?) I do know that the stores are planning on shifting how their shifts are scheduled because they had more people on during the non peak hours and less during peak hours.

and Wal ~mart is still the devil. But the Devil still pays better than most places in my area. ( at teh warehouse not the store)
