Are you assuming it's Islamic, or did you read that somewhere else?

Was just watching a report on CNN where they said they were Islamic militants, possibly Al Queda related, or at least with a similar agenda /shrug. Apparently this is part of an ongoing conflict and attacks are not really new to the area, but never before on this scale. It is interesting though that the article doesn't really mention anything about who it is.

This is a pretty major incident, a full blown tet offensive type assault. These guys apparently came in like a friggin' army.
The Deccan Mujahadin I think it was said.

Watching the NDTV feed from New Dehli... The Prime minister seems to be implicating Pakistan... That could be fun.

A major coordinated assault with multiple targets, ala AQ. But no suicide bombings like AQ, so most likely if any relationship it is only in training.
That they were seeking out any with American and British passports points to this being more than the usual run of the mill violence of inter-faction, or even Pakistani-Indian.
One of the analysts spouting on the news was saying this entire operation could have been financed with $5k, due to the weaponry and munitions involved. So any up and coming terrorist wannabes now know they can make their mark on the world on the cheap.

These attacks are semi-similar to the Chechen rebel siege of the Beslan school in Russia, at least that was what I thought when I first saw the news.
Guns, grenades, possibly bombs and a hostage situation. The same tactics are being deployed in India but on a larger scale (i.e. multiple targets, etc).
One thing is for sure, the Indian attackers have the same suicidal tendicies that the Cheches had in Beslan.

They were searching for people with an American or British passport.

They seemed pretty indiscriminant. Not that many foriegners died compared to Indians but they ranged from Japanese nationals to Aussies to Americans and Europeans. Its going to take a while for foriegn tourists and business people to want to come to India unless they absolutely must, which was probably the idea. Who knows if it was a Hindu vs Islam thing since India has a bigger muslim population than Pakistan does but is still a minority. It might just be a simple cas of the Have Nots going after the Haves in a country that is having some growing pains due to all the economic success that some are reaping the benifits of but alot arn't.

Aye, I'm buggered. My field of research is Indian history - I gotta go there after the New Year.

A "missing" fishing vessel found off the coast of india boarded by security found the captain dead and a sat phone with numbers to Pakistan in it. Cell phone calls traced during this incident in mumbai show traces to same area..

This was a well coordinated operation almost resembled the attack on Saigon during Tet 1968. Small groups with grenades and AK's spread throughout the city at major landmarks for maximum psychological effect.
