So I got the news, I will be a Washatonian (?) as of 8/22/11.
If anyone has a hook up on a U-Haul, Penske, Budget rental trucks let me know!! I get 15% for being an AT%T employee at Budget currently.

Washingtonian, but more specifically Seattilite.
U-Haul ran about $1200 for me between Oregon and Texas before gas costs, those things only get 8-10 mpg under load. And yeah, like Kelraz said, it may in fact be cheaper to sell everything you can't easily replace. Chances are you only have a handful of small items that you really need. Even goodwilling most of it helps. I had a simple policy on my last move -- anything that could not fit in the 17' uhaul went to goodwill. I haven't missed a single thing.
Good luck and have a safe move.

My buddy sold almost everything he had on craigslist in DC and bought all new stuff when he got to LA. May be a more cost-effective route, as an idea.
Have a good move :)

Cool what store did you get?? and what everyone else been saying. clean out as much as ya can and go light. just you at first and the wife and kids to follow or all in the family? alot to think about as your making the longest move possible in continental US.
Also keep in mind your going to have to invest in warm clothing. your days of shorts and t-shirts will be officially over. it is no where near as bad as living in the mid west or north east but is a lot like living in a frig for 9 months a year.

I'll have to make sure I swing through in November when I'm driving back North to scream something about AT&T sucking and Verizon being better, maybe throw a brick through the window for good measure :p

Have to agree with Kelraz and Malse. Downsize as much as you can. Sell/throw out/give away to friends/donate to charity anything you don't use DAILY. Otherwise you will pay big dollars to move the same shit you never use to a new location and with gas being what it costs..yah. If it is boxes of stuff you have not even opened in years to see what is in it, well don't even bother opening them up. Take it right to the dump and never look back. Things like washers/dryers, big furniture items, excess kitchen items. Sell it all. Unless it is family heirlooms or priceless memories, it can be easily replaced.
Even giving stuff away you are going to make money on the long term. I personally wish I was afforded the time to and now I am stuck selling junk off on eBay and Craigslist due to not being used and having to be stored. My move from Washington DC home to the Seattle area cost in the neighborhood of 3 grand. That was tolls, fuel, lodging and the truck itself. You could easily do better than that.
On the plus side, while the country swelters and burns, it is sunny and 70 degrees!

Ahhh yes the time of year when the Bremaloo's shed their winter coats and bask in the finest shorts and tube tops that walmart has to offer.
There are a ton of great thrift stores so between that and CL you wont have much problem filling your new place with stuff until you get back on your feet.
best to be anticipating a slightly higher cost of living. but on the plus side it is still a place with out state income tax.
