View Full Version : Movies Everyone seems to love, but you hate

A few movies I can't stand popped up as all time favorites on the other thread, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who occasionally wonders "how can anyone like (insert title here)". Usually the movies have many good points, but have one theme or scene that ruins them beyond redemption for me.
So... here are mine:
Forest Gump: No matter how stupid you are, do what you are told- and only good things will happen to you. Also, those close to you only have your best intentions in mind, even after you make millions of dollars... Yeah... right.
The Breakfast Club: Hi, can we take every stereotype of teenage life in the 80s, throw them together and make what many consider the "defining work of youth during that time". I was there, and my teenage years didn't look anything like that at all. Many years later, a movie called "Kids" came out, and that was a lot closer.
Gladiator: I don't care HOW crazy you are, if you are the Emperor, your personal guard/political allies are NOT going to let you into the arena with a killer. You want to be untrue to history to make a good movie, FINE, Braveheart did it. You want to take what could have been a good movie and ruin it with the final scene, you are an ass.

Titanic. My friends, my MALE friends (yes I questioned their sexual preferences upon hearing about it) saw it five times. I saw it once and the only coherent thought I got out of that flick afterwards was "I can't believe I had a supersize coke before a 3h+ movie".

Ummm...read this about the Emporer in Gladiator:
In the later stages of his reign Commodus became ever more obsessed with performing as a gladiator. He even changed parts of his palace into an arena in order to fight beasts there or gladiators. But Commodus was not satisfied with such private fights. He also appeared in public as gladiator. For the Roman public, or at least the privileged classes, it was a harsh shock to see their emperor publicly debase himself to the level of a slave or a prostitute in the arena. For, in Roman attitudes, gladiators were indeed understood as one of the lowest possible levels of society.

Good topic bat,
1. I'll second Office space this movie was trash and I work in a cube
2. Magnolia - no idea how come so many folks liked this movie.
3. Shrek - Has to be my ultimate hate on, NO shrek is not a classic and never can be a classic. Its a Fricken Disney movie they all have the EXACT same plot with the predictable feel good ending. A Classic movie actually does somthing new or different or pushes the envelope. Shrek Did non of these things.
4. Dare Devil or the Hulk - Both these movies sucked ass that is all.

Gangs of New York does have a long drawl in it. The first 20 minutes and the last 20 are all you really need to see. The rest is just filler story and you getting more and more pissed at the guy for getting pussy whipped by the chick.
It's a pretty decent flick otherwise.

I hated Crouching Tiger, too. My hubby bought it and watched it at home and I thought it looked like a Power Rangers remake.
I HATE the new star wars movies. The make up, the story line, the characters!!! Ewww.
Rocky I, II, III.. ad infinitum? *yawn* And that goes for most movies that just will ... not... die.
The movie with Robert Deniro and Billy Crystal.. analyze that, I think. Don't waste your money. I sat there, waiting, thinking the movie was going to get funny and before I knew it, the credits were playing and I still hadn't cracked a smile. I had to wake up my friend who went to see it with me, though. THAT was comedy.
As an aside, Monty Python and the Holy Grail will always rock.
I also have to agree with whoever mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean as ok. I put off watching it because I heard such terrible things, but finally went. I *loved* it. Although Johnny Depp was a bit too effeminate for me, I feel he played his role well. They all did!

Both Matrix movies, particularly the first. The second had a few more cool scenes, but also sucked for the most part.
Any Bruce Lee movies. Unarmed martial arts can bite my shiny metal ass, even more so when they are just about the only thing in the movie.
The Deer Hunter - Interesting setting, great actors, love, war, and Russian roulette... always a successful formula, right? I'm sorry, but this movie was a ridiculously long, tedious aberration.
Winner: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The only thing going for it is the quality of the special effects. Captain Nemo helping the British government? Absurd. Tom Sawyer as little more than a teen in 1897? He ought to have been at least as old as Quartermain. The villains get nifty futuristic weapons? Cool, let's go half a century into the future and pull some Stens out of our asses to give to Nemo's crew. Oh and while we're at it, let's temporarily shrink the Nautilus and all of its contents tenfold so it can go through a tiny frozen river into Mongolia. The characters retain little more than their names and a few superficial attributes apiece. This movie might just have worked if it had been tweaked a little and made into a real farce.

I agree on Gladiator and braveheart totally. The bit at the end where he shouts freedom when he`s being Hung-drawn and quartered is totally hilarious and could only have come from the US,where people still seem to go in for patriotical trash.

Anime is fucking retarded.
How can you insult a movie like Braveheart and then think cartoons are so crafty? Instead of sitting there jerking off to the panty shots on the latest Sailor Moon, go watch a decent movie. You insult our sense of patriotism and its integration into some of our movies, yet you claim Crouching Tiger is better?
Shouting 'Freedom' is funny? I suppose characters shouting 'OMG GOKU, LETS USE OUR ULTRA ZENO MEGA SUPER DUPER BLAST RAY OF MASS DESTRUCTION ON THE EVIL TRANSFORMING TOASTER' while the cartoonists cleverly insert little shots of 8-year old girls wearing school uniforms so that the sexually-deprived may fantasize about something other than their Everquest girlfriend is any better?
Try this sometime. Go into a video store sometime and sit next to the anime section and watch who buys it.
(Yes, I know I subscribe to many stereotypes.)

I've been reluctant to wade into this thread. It's obviously degenerated from "mainstream movies that you think sucked" into "my favorite movie type can beat up your favorite movie type."
I've got a lot (http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mycollection.asp?alias=Palimax) of movies. I've got a bit of Anime in there (Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away), but I'm not exactly an Anime fan. I think 1% of my collection is just right for the genre.
There's simply a lot of good movies in EVERY genre. Crouching Tiger wasn't only a good wire-kung-fu movie, it was a great MOVIE. If I just wanted wire-kung-fu, I'd re-watch Iron Monkey.
Spiritied Away isn't just a good anime film. It's a great film.
Apolocapyse Now isn't just a good war movie. It's a great movie.
I've got this little Japenese horror-shock fetish I'm trying to satiate, and I'll let you know how it goes. Audition didn't live up to my expectations, Dead Alive is still on my to-watch pile, Versus is backordered, and my hong-kong import of Battle Royale is "shipped." (Don't let anyone tell you the 8-minute longer "director's cut" is the complete BR movie. When they added those 8 minutes of mostly flashbacks, they cut some of the gore... My Hong Kong release might be from a dirty master, but at least it's the theatrical release.)

Omg die irl, Shew!!!1!
Yeah, I'm a tad anal relative to my age group, but I'm not going to shoot anyone. That's what CS and FT are for :p
Additions to the suck list:
Star Wars Episode One sucked like a former White House intern.
28 Days Later would be a pretty good movie if the zombies/Rage-infected people actually looked scarier than their undead EQ counterparts :\ And what's the deal with a happy ending in a "horror" (and I use this term VERY loosely) film? To its credit, though, the acting and parts of the plot were pretty decent, and the scenery made me want to move to England.
Tears of the Sun: if the sun had seen this film, it would have indeed cried - over the eight (give or take a few) bucks it wasted. Predictable, minimal realism (any less, and the guns would shoot backwards) and of course the mandatory happy ending.
Pearl Harbor: Let's just say that the day the movie was released shall forever live in infamy.

Anime is too large a genre to classify with one sentence. But most of the crap that is on Cartoon Network is just that, crap. Also it is completely for kids. Most of the Anime that is available on the Internet is pornography. And after one has looked about 20 images of that you have seen it all, unless you really get off on tenticles inserted into various orifices.
But with all that said, there is some really nice anime out there, Spirited Away comes to mind as does Vampire Hunter D, and hell I am a Star Blazers fan of old.
Now onto the "cinematic masterpiece" known as “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.” I went to this movie very excited, because it had been awhile since a decent sword play movie had been released. Unfortunately this entire movie was nothing more then a big budget Saturday afternoon martial arts flick. Our heroes, the good guys, were such amazing warriors that they had the ability to jump from building to building. In fact they were able to do this with such grace power that they could hover for a time, in essence our heroes could fly. Hell if you squinted your eyes just right, you wouldn’t notice the wires holding the actors up. But people were very impressed with the fight sequences. Now I seemed to be the only one in the theatre who thought “if these people can fly why they would bother to sword fight, why not just fly above the enemy and drop a rock on them?”
But I understand that we need some tension and obstacles for our heroes to overcome, in order for their successes to mean anything. But this film, like all martial arts films had no tension. All the fight scenes were so heavily choreographed that they looked comical. At no point in any of the combat did I really think our heroes could loose. As with all martial arts films the action was so heavily choreographed, you could actually see the actors stand still and wait for their opponent to move into position. Now where did our heroes get this amazing ability to fly? Oh by the way did I mention that only the good guys have this ability? Anyway, our main hero played by Chow Yun Fat. Is returning from some sort of monastery, where is has been perfected his warrior ability, and has decided to no longer be a warrior. I guess he learned the ability there. Ok, so the action sequences seemed less then fluid and actual, but I can forgive that and I decided to pay attention to the story.
Well the story was the TYPICAL bullshit that is in every martial flick made. Our hero returns home to find a women he loves, a traveling merchant, who also has the ability to fly by the way. Our hero wishes to give up his violent past, but can’t because someone he wronged now wants revenge. This movie was nothing new, nothing worth an $8.00 ticket.

rabican, you're pretty upset about the whole "flying" thing, aren't you.
Where was I?
Ah yes, Battle Royale. Let me say, first, that I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed watching the relationships and alliances deteriorate when faced with the kill or be killed terror. I especially enjoyed watching the "Lighthouse" girls collapse under the pressure.
I'm *somewhat* not clear about the beginning (the smiling girl) and the end (the running duo). Of course, it was late, and I was tired, so I might have missed something.
Similarly, I'm not so keen on the ending. Just seems... ...odd.
Anyway, I'll give it a B+ for the sort of violence and gore I was expecting (it was NOT nearly as over-the-top as I was expecting), and a B+ for story. But it does get an A+ for that certain je ne sais quois.

What the HELL are you talking about Palimax??I watched Battle Royale late last night.
Synopsis: Anticipating simply another routine class trip, a group of 9th graders, led by their teacher (Takeshi Kitano), are hijacked to fight in the Battle Royale, in which 42 students are dropped on an island with food, a map, and various arms. There, they must kill each other, until there is only one survivor left, who will be allowed to return home.
As the brutal game begins, terror and panic challenge the students' fragile trust in one another. Some suspect everyone, blindly striking down those who cross their paths. Others form alliances, dreaming of a peaceful solution with multiple survivors. But in the end, there may only be one person left to tell the tale of what happened on the island. You can get it in region-3 DVD from PokerIndustries for about $14 delivered. Don't blame me if your DVD player isn't region free of if you don't have a DVD burner to make a regionless copy.
www.battleroyaleonline.com/ (http://www.battleroyaleonline.com/) had a GREAT deal of information about this movie. At the very minimum, it's an enjoying "massacre romp" of a film. At the best, it's a facinating look at terror and love.
