View Full Version : MP3 Player Recommendations

Due to overwhelming pressure from my daughters, I am being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.
I have been informed that "cool" fathers have MP3 players for their music. Personally, I see nothing wrong with my vinyl albums and 8-tracks... but in the interest of keeping things peaceful, I am looking for an MP3 player.
I am looking for:
Small... the smaller the better
Flash memory instead of a hard drive. ( I have been told that they are sturdier and less likely to die on you... as well as longer battery life)
At least 4GB of memory
Ability to use it to move data files as well as music
Something reasonably priced... preferably under $300 USD
And I really don't know what else to ask for..... any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is probably too obvious an answer, but I believe the 4GB iPod Nano is going to be as good as anything else out there - very easy to carry around and pretty reliable.

Gandaar, if you're going to stick specifically to flash mp3 players, I'm going to agree with Fandros and say go with the ipod nano. SanDisk is also making a 6 gb flash player (the nano caps at 4 gb, if I'm not mistaken) that might be worth looking into: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=SanDisk+Sansa+e270&btnG=Search
Happy hunting. ;)

I have an iPod and freaking love it! I highly recommend them :) Find the size and price that's right for you though. They're very easy to use as well.

Remember, MP3s of music you own are perfectly legal for you to possess.
No one on this board sanctions the downloading of illegal music.

It's just so much easier for me go to itunes and download songs or albums that I want and then use software to make CDs of stuff I want. Remember if you do get an iPod back it up b/c like any piece of technology you can goof and in the iPod's case erase your collection!!!! I'm up to 4k songs on mine and haven't *knocks on wood* done that yet.
I love the versatility of the iPod, it connects to the car stereo and my home stereo or my PC. Some car stereos require extra parts or new stereos but it's still really cool :D

iPod all the way. Decent price, good storage space, and high quality sound.

Aye, not only for the product, but for the support you get with an IPod.
We sell them as well as some other companies, including LG and Creative. LG have a great warranty, but you pay WAY too much for little product.
My experience with Creative has been quite dismal. It turns out that should your Creative MP3 player break, you have to deal with the manufacturer directly and must pay a $25 fee just to return your broken MP3 player. Pure Garbage and why we've since stopped bringing them in.
Apple has excellent support as well as a solid product. Gonna be a sheep here and follow the herd, buy a Nano. ;)

Oh good question. While I plan on getting a MP3 player for my daughter I am not going to buy music online(Ill just be burning her CD on to the comp). With tthe Ipods is that the only way to get mucis is to buy it through them? I am a MP3 newb...

I was also thinking about buying either a video Ipod or a PSP, and I really dont know which one to lean to, One Ipod cant play any good games, Two PSP you have to buy extra memory sticks to use the MP3 crap. Other then that as much as I hate going with whats "Cool" I'll prob buy a Ipod before I buy any other Mp3 Player.

It's exceptionally easy to get the ipod to play any mp3 you want. The only complaint I have about them is that they don't play Ogg-Vorbis (although iTunes itself can with a plugin).

Thanks for the great information....
I want to be able to play my music (from CD's I own) AND be able to move files from work back and forth without having to burn those to CD. I do a lot of work related stuff at home and it would be great to be able to move the stuff back and forth at will.
Thanks again for the info.... I did not know Ipod had up to 6GB capacity... that makes it even better.

With the iPod there is some software that you can buy that will allow you to extract your music from your iPod and put it in mp3 format. iTunes lets you easily convert your CDs to the iPod it just takes a while.
It should be said that you can get the song from your iPod I just wanted an easier way so I bought some backup software for lik $19 that does it for me and it's much easier :D

Don't have to buy from thier store for sure.

i havnt checked on what mp3 players are out on the market now but , i got a Kanguru micro mp3 (256) when they started makeing them (probly obsolete buy now) its not bad , small , lite , and can be used as a jump drive also , dont like the controls on it , just a wheel type thingy that controls on/off, volume, fast foward/reverse ,and song selection , i'd rate the model i have as passable , could be better but it does the job
