Recently this little bit of family heirloom was discovered and shared with me over Thanksgiving, and I thought it was interesting enough that it warranted sharing.
Back during World War II my grandfather Aaron Horn was injured severely when his ship went down off the coast of Salerno, Italy, during the Allied_invasion_of_Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_invasion_of_Italy) and he really didn't share all that much with me since I was very young and he passed away before I was 12 years old. I still remember making fun of the "donut" he used to sit on every day, and how at the beach house seeing him in his bathing suit how his thighs and neck looked all patched together, but never really got to find out how or why. So now I know ... the PDF link below is a transcript of a radio interview my grandfather gave while in the navy hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.

To fill in the rest of the story, he never made it back to Texas but ended up settling in Philly after marrying my grandmother ("that little girl in Philadelphia") after the war. My grandfather eventually died of lung cancer, probably partially due to his injuries, many years later. Buddy, his brother, ended up going back to Texas safe and uninjured and didn't pass away until a few years ago.
