In a hodge-podge of bits and pieces, some relevant to recent threads, the Nation & World briefing in today's Pioneer Press had several interesting pieces. Of note are the one's regarding the EU proposed tougher sanctions on Iran, Iran cracking down on dress codes (again), the Taliban advancing on Kandahar, but most interesting to me was the one regarding the White House e-mails.

White House e-mail guarded

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled Monday that a White House office that has records about millions of possibly missing e-mails does not have to make them public. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said the Office of Administration is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, enabling the White House to maintain the secrecy of a lengthy internal paper trail about its problem-plagued e-mail system. The decision came in a lawsuit filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The functions of the Office of Administration "are strictly administrative," Kollar-Kotelly ruled.

I am not surprised by the continued veil of secrecy, which is resembling more and more an 'Iron Curtain', which this administration has surrounded itself with; but, I am curious why it gets nothing more than a small paragraph blurb under a general heading. This seems to me to be much more important, the breaking of a historical practice of a paper trail of the workings of the Office of the President and those on Capitol Hill. The Bush legacy will be a terrible one for a host of actions, this being only one more.
