We are finally getting a National Do Not Call List up here in Canada in September.
I know that a list has been in existence in the US for some time now, what is everyone's experience with it?
Have you noticed a dramatic decrease in junk calls? Are marketing firms still getting through?
One of my life long quests is to keep junk mail and phone calls to a minimum. I hunt these bastages down and get off of their lists.
Just wondering if a National Do Not Call list will help my efforts.

I think it helps, but I've also become much more careful about who I give my number to since changing phone numbers. I usually make up a number, or argue with people about why they need it. Sometimes I tell companies I don't have a phone, and they get embarrassed.
Cox communications was one of the fastest to sell my number, I believe, when we transferred cable service to our new house.
Unless you suspect the government of selling your number, it can't hurt to sign up, right?

My parents are on every "Do not call" list in existence. They receive more marketing calls than I even believed was possible. About 3-4 a day, every day.

Aye, I will be one of the first to sign up for the service.
I am not concerned so much if the Governemt will sell my number but more the security of the new system they have put in place.
I have worked enough on Federal contracts up here though that I wonder how well the system was built and what security holes it will have.
Time will tell.

Whenever I'm down visiting my parents, they get a calls over the weekend. My dad and I like to screw with the telemarketers by asking for their credit card number and telling them that they're being charged for the call. It's rather hilarious the responses we get sometimes.
This was the best telemarketer prank ever though. http://youtube.com/watch?v=un_PjRXV5l8

Scroll down to "Terrorizing Telemarketers" and Enjoy, watch out it can be NSFW
I have been on the list ever since it came out. I can't remember getting any calls at all.

I pretty much only get called by non-profits now, since they are exempt. Now and then I will get an automated call.

Agreed, we pretty much only get called by non-profits these days, but even they are getting more aggressive and frankly, more freaking annoying. We have one group that calls about every 3 months, start of a new financial quarter, and ask for money.
They call about three times a day and dont bother leaving a message. This past time when they called, I answered and asked them to take us off their calling list. We shall see if they actually do so.
I thought no call lists were fake? seriously.

This is one thing I'm like really weird about.
I think being harassed at home is absolutely disgusting. Tele-marketing is a relatively new thing here, and for the past few years I've slowly grown more infuriated.
Now I pick up the phone and the moment I sense it's not someone I know, I tell them to fuck off.
Honestly, I think it should be illegal.

Word to the wise, that won't stem the flow of marketing calls to your number.
Let them talk about 5 seconds and then bud into their script and tell them to take you off their phone list and mailing list. In Canada the telemarketers are obligated by law to remove you from their lists once you request that action.
If for some reason the telemarketer tries to persist with their script restate your demand. If they are fool hardy enough to continue then ask for their full name, as you need it for putting together the lawsuit. Funny enough they cooperate after that.
I learned along time ago to work their systems to get what I want. Telling them to screw off and hang up just puts your name at the bottom of the list, eventually your name will hit the top of the list again and they will ring you.

I think I get more calls to my damn on-call phone for some idiot named Shannon who had the number prior to us getting than I do any marketing calls at home.
I do get calls from non-profits but the do not call list has worked great for me. We just have to register every year (I think that may be a PA thing, not sure).

I use a GrandCentral (http://www.grandcentral.com/) number for anyone I don't know (and most people that I do). Its "spam" filtering features work exceptionally well.

I thought no call lists were fake? seriously.Government list is okay, but stay clear of private groups. That's an old spammer's trick to collect numbers.

"Hello. My caller ID does not recognize your number, so this call is being recorded in case this is a violation of the Do Not Call list which I have had my name and number placed on. Now, go ahead."

This *should* work quite well. Telemarketers are full of... less than ideal employees so the company usually just covers their ass and tells the employee to hang up. I did *inbound* sales and they still got sued all the time for some moron saying one sentence wrong.

Well...I saw a British guy tell someone that he was farting in his general direction, I don't believe, with the exception of Gordon Ramsey that British people say Fuck.

Also, if you want to try to offend them or get under their skin you'll have to get really creative. After a week of telemarketing someone could scream things at you that would shock george carlin, and you'd be yawning.
