Ahh yes, the Glorious Worker's Paradise...
We should all move to Europe and become waiters, because it's much better than living in the dreaded United States.

Analyst Oxford Economics said the UK's GDP per head of population will reach £23,500 - £250 higher than in the US.
1£ is about $2, so that means the average income per person is around $48k a year? Does that include minors? the retired? I'm barely average :(
does that factor in citizens only or all workers?
That should factor in only citizens I'd imagine, since its the total export divided by the sum of the citizens, though we all know there are tons of employees not included.

I apparently am below average and do ok, i make $40k.
On a side comment about tipping, I personally tip often for good service, not just from food, but hair cut, car detail, and other service oriented products.
Kelraz Bladesinger
01-07-2008, 10:56 AM
Well its a different story in Europe. Tips there are nominal at best (5% for exceptional service) but they get paid an hourly wage. There a waiter is a professional, many times trained or schooled in some fashion ... here they are college kids waiting to graduate to get a "real" job.

Sorry I was being facetious about the tipping.
About the 3rd day of my first visit to England, I finally figured out why the waiters were cheers!'ing me as I left the pub/restaurant.

Oh yes, an American customer is a time of praise.
People are starting to tip here, it's a phenomenon of the past five or ten years, but still I'd say a good half don't. Which is perfectly fine. When I waitered through Uni, I'd average about ten pound tips a night, so about 20 dollars. I remember in my last week we had an American group of about 6 in. Left me forty quid, so about 80 dollars, on a big bill. Was stunned, actually offered it back thinking it a mistake.
But yeah, we tend to be on a fixed and respectable wage, so tips aren't really a big deal.
Anyway, back to the topic - the article I think is mistaken when it says we have a lower purchasing power: hello Amazon.com. Everything's half price =)

What I think is funny is that right now the Canadian Dollar is equal to the American Dollar, but Canadians still get charged like double for a lot of American based services ($14.99 America, $25.99 Canadian for a book I just got, for example)

Those Samoans are a portly lot.....
Incidentally fast food consumption isn't always an indicator of how fat a nation is, just how poor it's eating habits are.
You can still have some fast food in your diet and not be a tub of goo. You just have to work out more.
Sadly, Americans aren't generally the type to get up off the couch during American Idol, unless it's to grab another Ding Dong.....

Bottom line is someone is very upset that I asked you what a Quid is, they took great offense that I did not use Google to ask a question that I was not in a rush to have answered.

Now I am going to have to have some smoked salmon for my afternoon snack. (Had a salmon filet for supper two days back, so need to switch it up)
And I always have Olive oil and assorted spice combos for dipping handy.....just no decent bread in the house, and too lazy to go out for any, so salmon will have to be content with some Sauvignon Blanc as accompaniment.
