The detained suspects are all men, Canadian residents "from a variety of backgrounds" and followers of a "dangerous ideology inspired by al Qaeda," said Luc Portelance, assistant director of operations for Canadian Security Intelligence Service, in a news conference. (Full list of adult suspects (http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/06/03/canada.names/index.html))

The targets were all in Toronto, CNN's Jeanne Meserve reported at least one source as telling her.

The charges include: participating in terrorist group activity, including training and recruitment; the provision of property for terrorist purposes; and the "commission of indictable offenses, including firearms and explosives in association with a terrorist group."

Great job getting these folks apprehended before they killed a bunch of innocent people for nothing. Strikes me odd even with most Canadians attitudes towards American dealings with terrorists and such that this group of men would want to do anything on Canadian soil. Would have made more sense if they wanted to strike from Canada at American targets. Goes to show no one is immune no matter what your stance.

We don't have an anti-American stance for dealing with terrorism Ibudin. Our troops re currently very active in Afghanistan, and we support the USA in it. It's not because we didn't follow you guys in Iraq that we're not opposed to Al-Qaeda.

But yeah, good job for the police, they probably saved a bunch of unneccessary deaths.

Yeah but no one cares about Afghanistan.

If you didn't step in line in Iraq, you don't matter. :D

I love that picture -- Holy shit, they've got a volt meter and soldering iron! Run for the hills!

The real question to me is by what mechanism these people were surveiled. I have a very strong suspicion it was not the multi-billion dollar domestic spying efforts.

Actually I do care, my nephew is stationed at some location with in Afghanistan with the rest of his Marine buds. Even though I am mostly English, I never really took much liking to England, but when I watch the British Army in Iraq I look at many of those soldiers and think, wow I am pretty fucking indebt to the Britian military as much as our own coutrys. Fact remains however, that terrorists are drawn to Iraq to fight against Americans. Yea we all know they where not there in the first place, but I think its time to let that go and fight them where ever they currently are. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan...you get the point.

do you also possess 3 tons of ammonium nitrate?

They did not "possess". The stories read that they "attempted to purchase" whatever that means. We will see how the story plays out once they go to trial. I was being somewhat sarcastic.

My understanding is they took possession of the supposed ammonium nitrate before the arrests were made.

Other things I have read also indicate that the CIS has tapes and/or copies of e-mails where the accused are discussing targets and making plans for attack.

This does not appear to be some strange urban islamic gardening club we are talking about if these things are true.

Let the Canadian courts decide their guilt, but it is heartening to know that someone north of our border is paying attention.

What "attempted to purchase" means is that undercover police sold them three tons of ammonium nitrate that wasn't really ammonium nitrate. But that's what they believed they were buying. Three tons, by the way, is triple the amount that Timothy McVeigh used on the Federal Building in Oklahoma (168 dead, over 800 wounded).

Great job by the Mounties, I'm really glad they caught these terrorists. They almost certainly prevented many hundreds of deaths. I only hope that Canadian anti-terror laws are srtict enough to put these would-be mass murderers away for a good long time.
