I'm sure I'm the minority, but I fail to see what the big deal is. I've never been one for celebrity weddings personally, but at least most of our celebrities everyone cares so much have accomplished something on their own - they weren't just born into a future seat of some level of power (and a larger level of being a mascot).

Like I've said before, the royal wedding just seems to be a more expensive version of a wedding between Paris Hilton and the Philly Phanatic.

Well to me it's something I personally can't wait for. I watched Princess Di wedding when I was a kid and I am actually off work Friday for this one. I plan to get up at 4:30am and tune and watch it. It's a fairy tale thing for me, I always wanted to be a princess :)

Prince William would want nothing better than to live a normal, uninterruptible life. He isn't asking for this attention.

That's the difference between celebrity and royalty. These Prince's serve their Country. I pulled this from Wikipedia:

He was educated at four schools in the United Kingdom and obtained a degree from the University of St Andrews. He spent parts of a gap year in Chile, Belize, and countries in Africa. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry—serving with his brother Prince Harry and, two years later, earned his wings by completing pilot training at Royal Air Force College Cranwell. In 2009, the Prince transferred to the Royal Air Force, was promoted to flight lieutenant and underwent helicopter flying training in order to become a full time pilot with the Search and Rescue Force. In autumn 2010, he completed his generic and special-to-type helicopter training and he is now at RAF Valley on No. 22 Squadron performing co-pilot duties on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter. On 16 November 2010 it was announced by Clarence House that Prince William and his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton are going to marry, and it was subsequently confirmed that the wedding ceremony would take place at 11 am on 29 April 2011 in Westminster Abbey, London.

The Prince, both of them, are expected to be bad asses. They are combat trained and well educated, unlike celebrities that simply act and or sing, or 'Jersey Shore whatever'. These people actually do more before 9AM than 95% of the world does all day.

My point is, they have my respect, and they should have yours too. The reason they may not? The unwanted-biased press. Kate Middleton is beautiful too, he did well, as expected...he is the Prince of Wales after all.

'I've never been one for celebrity weddings personally, but at least most of our celebrities everyone cares so much have accomplished something on their own - they weren't just born into a future seat of some level of power (and a larger level of being a mascot).'

- Hate it when people go for that same old complaint. The Royal Family bring in millions to the country in tourism, and generate hundreds of millions of pounds in charity through their individual charitable trusts, organisations, and causes. The Princes Trust, for example, has an annual turnover of £36m ($60m) and is engaged in community and youth projects which have had a profound impact on poverty and development in this country. Between them, the Royal Famil are patrons of 3,000 charities and spearhead the PR side of many international awareness campaigns.

And, unlike celebrities, both Royal Princes actually have worthwhile occupations. William is a helicopter pilot in Search and Rescue based at Anglesey, while Harry graduated from Sandhurst and is an office in the army and has served on active duty in Afghanistan.

Don't be too quick to jump on the stereotypical bandwagon.

Street parties will be quite common here in the UK, some counties have had hundreds of applications to councils for street closures. We've bought some bunting for our home, but we'll be going up to London on the day.

I'm more excited about the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, however (which is 60 years on the throne). There'll be a maritime procession of 1,000 boats on the Thames, the biggest maritime display in 400 years. It's gonna be tits.

I've read that over a billion people are supposed to be watching this thing, either via TV or Internet stream. If those people could find a way to make even $1 in that time instead and donate it to charity themselves, that would eclipse anything that these kids are going to do for charity.

Between reality TV, music/dance/talent/mouth-breathing contest shows, celebrity worship like this, Facebook/Farmville, and the sensationalized news cycle, it's a wonder that we can even tie our collective shoelaces. At this rate, we're going to inadvertently answer the Fermi paradox for ourselves.

LOL you are pointing fingers now about games? I never said anything negative about people who play games. I merely pointed out that something you like to do on a regular basis can be just as easily considered a waste of time. So is it cool if I play computer games on a laptop outside?! How about if they watch the Royal Wedding in the backyard... Then is it ok by you your highness?

I play 1-2 nights a week for 2 hours in case it matters. I enjoy taking my dogs out hiking and to the beach because its more fun then slaying pixelated dragons... Though I don't judge those who disagree unlike you.

I would disagree with this statement.

While posting on a message board may not change the world, I for one find the interactions and perceptions presented here to be highly interesting and enlightening. Understanding how and why others perceive things in different ways than I do helps me to understand the people and the world around me.

Would taking the time I spend posting or reading and instead volunteer that to charity possibly be more "productive"? Possibly... but would I have as much empathy for someone who perceives things differently than I do? With less empathy, would I be less tolerant and understanding of others, possibly causing a more negative reaction with others?

Who knows, but I still feel that time spent here is valuable to me.

Apologies for the derail, please return to your regularly scheduled bickering, and I'll do my best to empathize with it. ;)

I consider celebrity worship, which has become an industry with all the supporting magazines like People, OK, US, etc. and the Entertainment Tonight style programming to be ridiculous.

However, I do not consider people's interest and/or fascination with the British royal family to be on the same level as celebrity worship. The English Monarchy is one of the last enduring ties to our history of the last few centuries; Prince William is descended from King George, after all.

I also believe there is a strong desire to connect in some way, no matter how vicarious, to real life kings and queens and princes and princesses like those we heard about in childhood stories, even with the knowledge that their roles are more ceremonial in this day and age. Maybe it offers a brief escape from other daily events that are not as welcome.

Anyway, that is how I see it. And you obviously see it differently, San. So, I'll close, and you can run off and see if there is a circus or fair nearby, where some child surely has a balloon in need of popping. Don't want them to have that moment of imagining they can fly away with it, after all.

Bah, Sanchek...let the Brits and the Commonwealth have their fun. Yes, we fought a war to rid ourselves of the monarchy, but like it or not the relationship we have with the UK is one of father and son having reconciliation after the son eclipses the father. You still have to respect your progenitor. Jerry Seinfeld learned that.

This latest batch, new breed of Royals isn't so bad really. They try to prove their worth in that they are not total oxygen thieves and succeed at it. They have the time and the money and chose to use it wisely IMHO. If it were not for the "royal" tag, William would be just a rescue helicopter pilot and she would be the daughter of the owners of a party planning company. Kinda ordinary.

21 pages, he's still spending the time being an A-grade cunt.

Oh, and Sancunt, you really don't know how close you came to a Japanese banning back then. Hint hint at the hidden message there.

The truth is, you're the moderator of a forum where the majority of the remaining community not only would rather you were not the moderator, but in fact despise you. You are not just content to wish this community gone, but you spend your 'busy life' trolling every post into dust to ensure the remaining community gains no ending enjoyment from it.

That's the sad truth. We need you here like a hole in the fucking head, Sancunt, and yet you'll ride this forum into the ground because you are a power mad, cock-sucking, cunt-faced prick.

We used to eat shit-monkeys like you up in the early days of this forum.

Ohh, unless the answer is that they're online parties!

Probably the saddest part of that post is that you truly seem to believe Facebook and Twitter are the same thing. When it comes to run-of-the-mill communication mediums in modern day society, you're functionally retarded. Basically, you see them both as "CRAZY NEWFANGLED TECHNOLOGIES THAT SCARE ME!!! WWWWAAAAUUUGHGHGHGHGHG!"

Thankfully, laggards like you are entirely impotent when it comes to the development and/or adoption of new technology, else we'd never have had message boards like this one to begin with.

Enjoy your ever increasing irrelevance.

In all fairness to Halo, if the original BBS was as much of a cesspit as twitter it probably would not exist in this form today either.

Twitter is trash masquerading as relevant due to a dying media trying to reinvent itself with the times.

Sanchek
06-10-2011, 12:43 PM
BBSes were no better than anything we have today, just less useful. They were full of people playing Legend of the Red Dragon (aka. D&D Farmville), trading 16 color 640x480 porn, and trolls just like we have here. They were just siloed and none of that was very visible from outside (or preserved for us accurately look back at now).

Same with Usenet, which still harbors some of the most cainotophobic curmudgeons you'll find anywhere. A bunch of alt.* groups that make Second Life furries look normal doesn't exactly have the sophisticated high ground that those laggards like to claim.

With every medium and platform ever invented, it's all about how you use it. If you choose to consume the trash on Twitter or Facebook, you're doing it wrong, not the service itself.

Exactly.
I use Twitter almost exclusively for work related things. Many of the folks I follow are leaders in my industry and tweet blogs, articles, newsbits, hints, tips, tweaks, etc. It's also very useful while at conferences, hearing if a session sucks, if a session has moved, etc. So yeah, it truly is all about how you use it.

Sanchek
06-10-2011, 01:55 PM
Yeah, the combination of smartphones and Twitter are a huge game changer at conferences where enough other people use it.

In all fairness to Halo, if the original BBS was as much of a cesspit as twitter it probably would not exist in this form today either.

It was, you just didn't look for it, because it was more difficult. A fundamental point of understanding is that teenage girls have NEVER had anything important to say, and if you look at how they're using something you've missed the point. Some BBSes were great, most were the equivalent of Youtube comments with grainy ASCII art and copies of 2600.

Twitter is trash masquerading as relevant due to a dying media trying to reinvent itself with the times.

If you're seriously trying to follow dead tree media on instant messaging, I'm sort of lost on what you're trying to accomplish. The point of microblogging services was not to facilitate the CNNs of the world proving how incompetent they are in real time, although it works great for that, it was so that spontaneous mesh networks could form with no guidance whatsoever. Sure, most of what people want to say is entirely trivial and advertising is a corrosive element of unimaginable destructive power, but ever since the first PDP-8s ran 300 baud serial lines to each other to copy the predecessor to internet email and USENET back and forth, the ability of individuals to connect with each other on the basis of intellectual interest as opposed to proximity and social structures has been entirely unprecedented.

I personally am much more interested in in-depth research as opposed to topical discussion so I don't get much use out of it, but even a curmudgeon like me sees the utility.

Haloface

'with every medium and platform ever invented, it's all about how you use it. If you choose to consume the trash on Twitter or Facebook, you're doing it wrong, not the service itself.'

- Like posting tree branches you've just cut down? You're the biggest hypocrite going mate. And then proceeding to tell us all you're too busy having a life 'outside' to bother with such mediums.

You cannot honestly believe you're talking sensibly, can you? No bullshit here, I'm not being offensive. I just want to know if you honestly think you've made sense, based on the above? Because we both know you tweeted tree branches you had trimmed or cut down. We both know you said you had too much of a life to use things like Facebook. And then in the next breath you're defending the use of both in ways you yourself do not conform to.

Come on, be true to yourself.

Sanchek
06-11-2011, 03:25 PM
You're so obsessed with this tree branches fetish, you're beginning to make Rain Man look socially adept. It's been something like two years, and you still can't come up with anything more than innuendo even though everything I post on Twitter is wide-open in the public.

If you weren't entirely full of shit, it should be trivially easy for you to prove otherwise.

With your willful ignorance about how they work, I don't see how we can have a nuanced conversation about the different uses for these platforms. Some people get utility out of services like Facebook, but a lot of people get obsessed/addicted and waste hours a day doing little more than mouse-based channel surfing. That's not limited to Facebook, of course, but Facebook is the easiest to call out by name since it's one of the most egregious examples.

If you look at my previous points about Facebook, without taking them out of context, it should be plainly obvious that I'm referring to the e-channel-surfers and not the platform as a whole.
